Yes. Back up your data files and resintall OSX with an archive and install and then upgrade only to the version you want. Why would you want to do this?
While your directions on returning to an earlier version of QT was fine, I find your statement "Well it actually is not [broken] at all. On my 3 different macs it works business as usual" doesn't much help the many of us who have had 7.1.6 problems.
I own two Macs, am buying a Mac Pro, and run a Mac computer lab with 30 computers, and a laptop cart with 17 iBooks. I've used Macs since 1985.
Before QT 7.1.6, I and my colleagues had NO problems; afterwards, nothing but playback issues. I finally had to archive and install the older 7.1.5. But now I can get back to video. I managed to stop the upgrade among the nearly 1,000 Macs in my district. Others were NOT so lucky. There IS a problem is 7.1.6, and I would consider the update broken, at least for some systems.
Apple hasn't addressed this for weeks, and THAT's ridiculous.
Great news.
Now we know where the first group of Mac's that can be "taken over" because they don't have the security changes implemented by 7.1.6.
Add my three machines (two Mac's and a Win XP) to the list that has had no issues with 7.1.6.
I'm afraid that you've added nothing useful to this discussion, QTkirk. Once again, how does your lack of QT problems serve to help the many of us suffering from 7.1.6 problems?
Joking about security issues doesn't much matter when one loses the imperative day to day functionality of Quicktime. At this stage, deadlines must be met.
Apple needs to address this. Fans who experience nothing wrong themselves, might want to join in to get this problem fixed for the benefit of those that do.
But you didn't tell us what your trouble with QuickTime even is.
You merely added a "me too" to a thread that also didn't post a question about 7.1.6.
His post reads "it's broke".
So is my 1962 Corvair.
Wait a minute. Did you put "Trouble" in quotes because you think this is not a real problem? I have a 800 mHz G4 iMac, and an iBook, but this has also been experienced by some of my friends with eMacs and iBooks. I've had the issue with iBooks myself.
Putting the computer to sleep, which I tried after reading about it a month ago, didn't work on MY G4. It was of no value to me. But even if it did work, how is THAT a solution when you are frequently editing QT video tutorials, as I often do on my old 15" iMac.
I'm about to lay down $7,000 on a new system. I DON'T want to have this problem in a new system. However, I still want to use my G4 to make screen captured tutorials.
The point is that it is not a universal problem, e.g. if anyone upgrades to 7.1.6 it won't work, and it can't be a G4 vs. G5 vs. Core2 Duo problem because I have one of each and it works on all of them.
I use the full installer (never deltas or software update packages) , repair permissions before and after the install and for 4 years no upgrade, update or patch has done anything untoward. I cannot be the one lucky guy among millions of users.
Not any longer.
I think I last used it when running 7.5 (and a networked need for that type of communication).
I doubt it is the cause of your troubles.
Somehow I think Apple is having a hard time determining what set of conditions sets off this weird QuickTime 7.1.6 behavior for some folks.
I also verifiy my hard drive, repair permissions, use full install of packages, repairing permissions after each restart and have never had a problem with a software update until this QuickTime package. I also do not have my system loaded with a lot of third party stuff. My G5 iMac got hit by the video freezing/audio working problem. I have been working with the Apple Product Specialists and finally had to do an Archive and Install to get back to 7.1.5. I certainly wish there was another more secure solution but at the present there is not if I want to use iMovie to continue to work on my video projects.
So, just because you do not have a problem does not make the problem nonexistent for everyone else . It does exist and you are very fortunate it has not affected one of your many systems. Please don't be so condescending to those that are experiencing this current problem and please don't assume that they must have done something wrong when they updated their machines.
