Microsoft Word for Imac G3 OS 10.1.4

I'm looking for a version of Microsoft Word to use with a G3 IMac OS 10.1.4. Any ideas? Also, where can I find it?

MacBook 2,1, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Word 2004 works (with some known defects like being able to hard crash OS X by cutting and pasting multiple format items from a web page). If you only copy text from a web page, it will not crash.

It seems as though our copy of Office 2000 also works with X but I would have to reconfirm that.

As for a source, Google for it and you will get several options. Here is a used copy for $95 at Amazon.com:

OS X10.1 is basically obsolete. If you would upgrade your OS to Panther 10.3 you would have more choices for a word processor & printer.

The freeware NeoOffice is equivalent to Microsoft Office. It can open Excel files, Word files & PowerPoint files. You can also create these types of files that can be opened by PC users. http://download.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

Thanks. My son's only 7 and it's only for him to be able to type short stories and the like. I checked your location at Amazon and it says that it requires a minimum 10.2.8. You still get it to run on 10.1.4?

Thanks, I know it's obsolete. I should have bought the software long ago, but was always able to use my versions at work. I tried before to download and run Panther, but wasn't able to do so.

The Neo Office looks like a great alternative, but it had mimimum 10.2.8 requirements listed on the website. Would it still work?

In my opinion, you don't really want to stick your 7-year old son with the complexity and crankiness of Microsoft Word just yet.

I recommend AppleWorks. It is simple, approachable, easy for the novice user to get his arms around it. Includes spreadsheet, database, and drawing/painting and simple presentation (powerpoint-like) features. It is NOT a toy.

The interface is very consistent from function to function.

There is an active discussion forum for AppleWorks nearby.

Almost all of what he learns will transfer to Microsoft Word when he is ready to make that leap.

It can be bought new at the Apple online store for US$79, shipped.

Your 10.1 software package should include TextEdit, which is a simple word processor. This should be sufficient for a 7 year old to type short stories. No need to spend $ on Word or AppleWorks.

I agree with Grant- go for AppleWorks. Far less complex or bloated than Office. You should be able to pick it up on eBay for cheap.

Didn't Appleworks or its forebear, ClarisWorks, come bundles on nearly every G3 iMac? It did on our G3 400DV.

Thanks for the info. I found TextEdit and that looks great. I'll keep in mind Apple Works for the future, though it was not bundled on our G3.

I got my copy of AppleWorks through buying an eMac applications CD on eBay. Cost me about $20 as I recall.

There was a Claris Works for Kids, which I think may have been only available for Classic, OS 8/9, before it was retired, not sure if you can find it anymore. It included some drawing and word processing tools and other templates and activities with simple menus geared towards kids.

Another suggestion, off-topic,
Kid Pix Deluxe 3 for OS X 10.1.5 or higher, for creating graphics, slide shows, etc.

Good point, Glen. My kids loved KidPix, even when we had it in b/w on the old SE/30 running OS 6.0.4! Got the color version with our first color Mac, a Performa 475 (25mHz clock and a whopping 160MB hard drive!).
