Got a new 15'' macbook pro last night. Bottom quarter of screen has the flicker issue. Taking it in over lunch today to see about getting it replaced. As reported previously if you go full brightness then you cannot see the flicker.
I ordered one of the new MacBook Pros when they went up on the store, and received it the following Monday (June 11). I had the flickering problem in the upper-right corner, and received a kernel panic after using the machine for 10 mins (plus I was kicked off my AirPort network 3 times). I called Apple and arranged for new machine, and sent the other one back.
The new machine arrived on the 15th, and this time there was flickering across the top 1/3 of the screen, not just in the upper-right corner. I left for a business trip the next day, but called the when I returned (25th). They're sending me another machine, which hopefully works properly. Unfortunately the machines are backordered now, so it won't ship until the first week of July.
Why hasn't any of the Mac news sites picked up on this issue? We're all describing the same issues, so there's clearly a problem with the new screens.
To take it back or not. I see the flicker sometime, it bothers me, but I know I am going to go back to the store and as much as anyone will stare at the screen no one is going to notice it. Has anyone had a problem proving this to apple staff, or do they take your word for it. Might be better to accept what I have got and stop being so critical.
Really difficult to justify, but do get the impression of a flicker / kind of a throbbing chage in brightness. Any suggestions? Still in my first 14 days.
I replaced my ageing PowerBook with a 2.4GHz MBP on Saturday. When I turned it on, I certainly experienced the Wow! factor. However, when I opened a Word doc, I noticed that the botton third of the screen had a sepia or yellow tinge to it. I initiated a thread on this forum and got a response which alerted me to this being a more general problem. Having read this thread, I tried to ignore the yellow tinge, then tried to convince myself it wasn't too bad and that I could live with it, then decided I couldn't, so took the machine back. I was asked if I wanted a replacement, but declined, having viewed this discussion.
I am stuck with my G4 just now, with my money reserved until I know that the problem has been addressed by Apple. The big problem is, how will I know that Apple has done so, as they are very tight-lipped over issues like this? Those of us committed to the Mac platform would be reassured by an acknowledgement that our hard earned cash id getting us the value for money for which the platform is renowned.
Has anyone that has the screen flicker problem installed this update and can acknowledge that it works. I am holding out on my new purchase till i know this problem is fixed.
the shimmer or flicker that I was experiencing, has now been reduced or replaced with slow waves or bands that undulate to the top of the display. While this is slightly less annoying that the shimmering, I still do not consider the issue resolved.
This update appears to be basically revised nVidia drivers.
I will try this on my MBP when I get home. Have my flickering MBP home, and a new one is in transit from shanghai. Hopefully TNT does not pick it up today and I will be able to test the update on it tonight.
After I took mine back, the new one
does not have the flicker issue. So those of you who think this is the case with all of them? You are completely wrong.
However, obviously a great number are in fact defective — so I hope those of you still suffering from this issue, I hope for your sake Apple does something.
I didn't have a poblem proving it. The Genius guy glanced at it and said "man, that would really give me a headache..." They swapped out for a new one without a problem and it has no issue.
I am surprised Apple is so hush hush about this defect though. They must have had thousands of returns so far.
I will have to agree with _vlad. The ficker is gone but now there is a slow band(s) that scrolls up or down the screen. It appears at all brightness levels too.
Same here. Although it is less noticeable it is still there as slow-moving waves on solid colours. I hope Apple takes note of this and works out another update, that completely eliminates any interference.
But nice to see that Apple listens to its customers and reacts so quickly.
