Crash with external monitor and KVM

I just got the new 15" MacBook Pro, which I'm trying to use with an external Samsung monitor. I have a Belkin Flip KVM, which lets me flip the monitor and a USB port between two machines. This requires no special software - it's just a passive switch.

For some reason, the external monitor isn't working when it's connected through the KVM. In fact, having the monitor connected causes the MacBook to crash most of the time.

This works fine with my old PowerBook G4, so I don't think it's a problem with the KVM.

If I connect the monitor directly to the MacBook, it works.

Any ideas?

You have already troubleshot (troublshooted?) the macbook and the monitor. They work. Add the KVM, they don't. It's the KVM.

It is unacceptable for a new computer to make a passive KVM stop working.

As I'm another person who has successfully used a Belkin KVM with an earlier Powerbook for a number of years, I find it disconcerting that a new MacBook Pro (which I am considering) would not be "plug and play" simple to use with my KVM.

It's a major hassle to reconfigure a multiple computer setup to accommodate something like this. I hope a fix or workaround is discoverd shortly.

Not sure I follow your logic here. If the PowerBook and the Flip work together, and the MacBook and the Flip don't, and everything else is the same, then the MacBook seems like the most likely culprit. But it could also be something wrong with the Flip that only manifests itself when it's connected to the MacBook.

I'm attaching some log files from when I booted the MacBook with the Flip connected, and it crashed.

The KVM is crashing the macBook not the other way around since the KVM is passive and cannot crash. Something in its wiring crashes the macbook so don't use it.

Not necessarily. Perhaps some problems with a hastily-developed driver or process on the new MacBook Pro is just not handling the KVM switching properly.

Basic video connections, like USB connections or even AC power connections, just shouldn't even be a concern for users who upgrade. Sheesh.

I hope some Apple engineers occasionally check the forums, and are checking up on this.

What a nuisance, huh? ...pt
