LaCie problem ?

Hello all, I see that this thread is somewhat new. I too am having the exact same issue with my LaCie 250GB External. Cary, you described my issue spot on and in the exact same sequence of events. i am about to purchase the shell and give this a whirl. I have at least 9,000 songs and over 13,000 photos on there form the last 8 years, and this all happened 3 weeks ago, just before the birth of my daughter.

Any-who, I will take a stab at this and let you know the outcome. I have the same flashing blue light and the clicking. I'm hoping its the firewire and not the drive.

OK, here goes nothing. Please reply with any advise before i rip my lacie apart.

What a coincidence, I'm also am having a the same problem. From reading above, it seems like my problem is identical with Cary and Loumazz. I have a Lacie 100 GB external tower. It was working fine for about a couple of years, but now it either won't mount or it won't stay mounted for more than a few seconds. If I happen to get it mounted by a hit or miss process of rebooting or powering down, i can only drag one file at a time to the desktop before it "clicks" and freezes.

Cornellius' solution really gives me hope since it worked for Cary. So Loumazz, I am waiting for your results to see if it worked for you! And if Cornellius or Cary are reading this, i would love hear more of your input if you can!

Ok, no one responded to my Lacie issues, but I did take the advise of Cornellius (since it worked for Cary). And what do you know, the OWC NEPTUNE solution worked for me also! I now have access to all of my files with no problem. For anyone who will be reading this thread in the future, do not dispair. If your Lacie (i had the vertical version, 120 GB) keeps clicking off, go get the Neptune. I had to wrestle with the Lacie case and the screws on the inside a little bit. But once I removed the core, it was easy to
put it inside the Neptune.

The "LACIE issue" began with 10.3.8 and is still with us. I had been a long time advocate against their FW products due to the high failure rate my clients and I were experiencing. Researching an unrelated problem I discovered it is an OS issue. The failure on the LACIE's can be repaired by someone with steady hands and a good small soldering pencil. Most likely you will find that the FW ports have become separated from the PCB and 4 small pins need to be re-soldered.

I'll add my frustrated self to this list, although I'll try the soldering trick, and/or the new external mount - so thank you all for that good advice. Lacie has been useless. Their tech support acts like mine is the first time they ever heard of this problem!

In many companies, it's very possible that their first tier tech-support was flipping burgers two weeks ago, so this may well be the first time that they've heard about it!

Hello LaCie HD Quirky Power Supply Sufferers;

I too was having this problem recently with LaCie drives (2 of 5) and after spending hours running disk utility software discovered that they worked fine on one machine using a power cable from a different LaCie drive and they wouldn't work using their original power cables. Voila! It's the freakin power cable. Apparently, according to others on the WWW, LaCie has been having this problem for years. I found an online please for answers on this problem dated 2005. It's also described on LaCie's website under "frequently asked questions" ( http://www.lacie.com/support/faq/faq.htm?faqid=10159). Their solution: buy a new power cable for $19. Sounds like cha-ching to me. You would think since this is a common problem that they'd give you a new one at a discount or shipping cost.

This presents a problem to many folks who probably unknowingly chucked their hard drives thinking they were dead. Not everyone is tech savvy. I for one, will no longer buy LaCie. Boycott!
