XPostFacto - Stuck in OS X Grey Apple Screen

XPostFacto version 4 requires a non-trivial re-arrangement of the Parameter RAM. If your PRAM battery is not good and strong, you could lose those changes and get stuck.

The usual drill when you get stuck is to use the C key to boot to an OS 9 CD, find XPostFacto on you Hard drive and run it [it WILL run from an OS 9 CD, I promise] and ask it to please help you boot to the Mac OS X image on that Hard Drive. If you get stuck again immediately, have it re-install BootX, or Extensions, or everything, and it often fixes itself.

i found out that if i get stuck booting to OS X i can hold the option key and it will boot into OS 9.2.2 that is if you have OS X set to boot by default.

also i zap the pram a few times which will reset the pram and make OS 9.2.2 the default OS to boot to and open xpostfacto and set to boot to OS X again.

i have been having this problem more and more

but mine is that is will start to load at the grey apple logo and shut off. when that happense i have to zap the pram.

like what said here i think my pram battery is going dead but i have yet to see the clock go wrong

Check the battery's voltage with a digital MultiMeter. I salvage old CR2032 batteries from dead PC motherboards. Usually about 20 percent of the batteries I get are so dead I end up having to recycle them.

To check the battery voltage, you will have to unplug your Mac to shut off the "always on" tiny 5 Volt power supply (known as "Trickle Power"). If you leave the plug in, you will be measuring Trickle Power, not the battery.

Be very suspicious if the 3.6 Volt battery seems to be producing 5 volts.

A battery that is producing 3.2 Volts in the circuit, working, is usually still OK, but the voltage drops off more and more sharply once it starts to decline, so you should think about getting a new battery.

A battery under 3.1 Volts in your hand is effectively dead -- it is not worth the trouble any more.

Which suggestion worked? The new battery, or relaunching from the CD and having XPostFacto Install Everything?

I am having the exact same thing happen now when I try to boot into OS X, but I can still boot into OS 9.

I have a new battery on order. My current one is about 4 years old.
