I just downloaded the new Safari 3 for Windows beta. The install seems to have gone fine, but when Safari is launched, none of the application text shows, i.e. no menus, no right-click drop down text, no url, and none of the text on the apple home page.
Any ideas? Or is this just one of those beta quirks?
Tried it, but the application repairs itself (XP) and then relaunching the app does nothing to get the text up and running. The built-in links are brining up the web page OK (quickly). So close, yet so far away!
I can confirm that the following procedure worked for me in getting Safari running in XP Pro SP2:
1. Copy the Lucida Grande font files to the \Windows\Fonts directory.
2. Rename the Safari.resources folder to something else.
3. Try to start Safari, get an error message, and dismiss the message.
4. Name Safari.resources back to its original name.
5. Start Safari.
"fix" didn't work for me either. renaming the folder caused the installer exe to reinstall the "resources" folder before launching. Clicking on the bug report button causes the program to crash completely.
The only thing I noticed is that all the people that report it not working have XP rebuilding the software installation. Which in my case it didn't. It just crashes the application when I started it with the renamed directory. (Granted lots of harddrive spinning)
Ya, it would seem this would have been an easy "TESTED" feature.
But BETA is Beta. and MS has had their share of bad Betas.
I have tried this a couple times, however, after I rename the Safari.resources folder to something else, then restart Safari, I watch as a new Safari.resources folder is created and Safari continues to launch without any text.. No text on any menus, address bar or any webpages.. by the way, I can't type an address and go to it either.. Knowing that I'm typing the correct url, even though I can't see it, after hitting return the page doesn't refresh or anything.. Only clicking on image links works..
I'm having the same issue, and I'm assuming tons of people are as well. I had my coworker try the installation and he got the same thing. We're both running Windows XP Pro.
My boss, however, did the install with his Vista machine and it works beautifully. Figures. 🙂
Hope this gets sorted out soon as it will cut out my need for booting up the mac to check cross-browser compatibility!
I installed Safari on my Windows XP Professional SP2 machine and when I opened it, the menus had random characters. I tested the software on another machine and it worked fine.
