By the way something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. So don't panic. In that case use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on the desktop and check this link for alternative methods:: Safely Disconnect IPod
Ok well I am trying to figure out if you can have songs in your library but not on your ipod! I unclicked the box next to the song I did not want on my ipod but they were still on there! I also checked the box that said only sync checked items but when i plugged my ipod in again it was unchecked! Please help me! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Clicking on the arrow displays the content of the iPod. Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to update automatically (sync). If you want to access the iPod directly, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". Click on the picture of the iPod, to bring up the preference tabs.

the only problem i have is that i do not know where the preference tab is
Have you looked at iPod 101 as I suggested? When you click on the iPod icon (the picture of an iPod in iTunes, the one with the arrow beside it that you clicked on earlier) the preference tabs appear in the main pane on the right. The first tab is labelled "Summary". I think you need to take a deep breath and stop and look at the reference material.
I looked at ipod 101 but i am very confused..... I cant find the preference tab though..
OH! ok i thought it was labeled preference ... ok im good now!
Good, I'm glad for you. I hope you finally get everything sorted, I'm off for the night. Take care.
alright i got that ok i dont know what i was thinking!
ok now i am in that tab what do i do to take songs off of my ipod that are already there without deleting them from the library?
Thanks for all the help!
Go back over the links I sent before and decide on how you want to manage your iPod. How you delete content from your iPod depends how you have it set to update:
Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod
I'm off now so stop and read everything through, if you take your time you'll get there.
