Startup disk almost full. What do I do now?

Hi, and thanks for any help in advance!

I have received a message that my startup disk is almost full. It suggests deleting files. I have a MacHD and a LaCie HD. I am unsure of what to do, as I wish to keep my files.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kcat

Hi, Scott...

You have a life, and you help people online out of the goodness of your heart, and when you have time. I realize this, and that this is true for every helper on this board! Just needed to be said!

Anyway, I restarted the Mac, and restarted SuperDuper!, and this time, it almost made it, but failed yet again. Here's the message I got:

| 08:30:30 PM | Error | ditto: /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/.k/k.sparseimage: No space left on device

Not having enough space is a worry I mentioned in an earlier post, because MacHD is smaller than LaCie/Mufasa. I did buy more space for iDisk, but I guess that didn't help.

I've looked at the User's manual, but I don't know enough to follow everything it says with any confidence yet...

I wrote Dave, though he's still on vacation. (One he has thoroughly earned, I have gathered.) In the meantime, I'm trying to remain calm. If you can help, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Kcat

Here's the deal.
Your MacHD was full.
Now, you can't copy all those files back to your Mac.
You need to either get a larger internal hard drive, or backup some data to CD/DVD and then restore your MacHD.

Bad of me not to think of that before going forward.
I was so engaged in saving your data, I forgot about the original issue.

To each person who assisted me in this thread:

After working with you kind people, Dave of SuperDuper!, and finally, Apple Product Specialists for many grueling hours every day for an entire week ⚠ everything seems to be back in order.

First, I tried hard to fix it on my own, then by working with your generous help in Discussions, which, understandably, Apple steadfastly encourages people to do. It is, however, hard enough to repair Macs even with physically having it right there and with great knowledge. It is even more challenging to do so via forums. It is tougher still when the one seeking help is too new at the issue to even fully understand it.

After things reached an overwhelming stage, Dave finally said take it to Apple, because something seemed really wrong, so I called them. I'm trying to think of how to explain the resolution, but I can only do so by saying apparently the operating system had been copied to LaCie and when trying to copy it all back over to MacHD... yikes! It got done, finally, but to accomplish that was harrowing, even with Product Specialists, you good people, and Dave!

All of you helped me get through treacherous cyber-waters, and you have my gratitude. I just want to thank every person who offered assistance. You were great.

Well, kcat, I'm glad to hear it.
I was worried since you dropped-off, and I'm relieved that it's all OK now.

Yes, this type of situation is indeed hard to do in a forum and not in person - the sad part is that had I (we) had this right in front of us, it would have been a pretty straight-forward process - having done this way too many times to count.

In the end, you're OK, and that's what counts.
It was a pleasure helping you through this, and if more folks were as kind as you, I think people in need of help would find many more willing participants - you tend to have to break away from here at times due to the lack of gratitude or just plain good manners.

Thanks for your thanks, and take care.
I wish you and your Mac well. 🙂
