Can't access Tiger Mac from OS 8.6 Mac

In OS 10.3 I used to be able to access my G4 Mac from my old G3 Mac running OS 8.6 without a problem (via an Ethernet network). Since I've upgraded to Tiger, I can't anymore.

I've read the APF incompatible posts, and I can access the G4 through the G3's Chooser (AppleShare) by typing in the G4's IP address. I can get to the G4 drop box, but when I start copying a file into it, after just a few seconds, I get the message "[my G4 computer name & IP address] via TCP/IP - The file server's connection has unexpectedly closed down"

No matter what I try, I get the same result.

On the G4 I have Personal File Sharing turned on, but nothing else. Am I missing something?

Help! This is a terrible situation. I need to be able to send files between the two computers.

OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!

10.4.9 broke it bigtime, but some have had success with the last few updates correcting it.

With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.4.8 machine.

Another solution is OpenDoor's $39 Shareway IP, (some OS7, 8, 9 releases had a limited version included)...

(not certain it works with 10.4.9 though)

Try getting the file by using the G4 to grab it... getting a file works better, up to a point, than putting a file.

That is exactly what I did.

I can't get to the G3 from the G4 at all.

Have you tried it by IP yet? Appletalk is still used for Discovery of some services, so you mught try enabling that if it isn't already.

I think that the 8.x OS is the operative fail point.
I had heard that the oldest mac OS that tiger could get to was 9.x...isn't it?

Either way. At the antique, under the apple menu, in the network (or is it tcp/ip menu?), configure;
"Appletalk using TCP/IP"

look for answer in the Help menu on your new OS-X machine...i think there's something there.

That is how it is already configured. I connected via the IP address and it's set to Appletalk using TCP/IP. And the error message I get ("[my G4 computer name & IP address] via TCP/IP - The file server's connection has unexpectedly closed down") indicates that it IS connected via TCP/IP.

On the G3, Grab/Get a file from the G4, to see if what I mentioned earlier is evengoing to work or not.

I'm not certain, but I think without Shareway IP, it wouldn't work either direction, but with it it worked one way only.

And as you emphasize, it does seem like something's connected.
The 'unexpectedly closed down' is the issue that BDaqua is pointing you toward with his references.

Thank you all for your posts, but I feel like I'm not getting anywhere. I have ALREADY looked at all the links mentioned, and followed those directions. That was all done before my first post.

Let me reiterate:

The OS 8.6 machine IS ALREADY set to Appletalk using TCP/IP. I have ALREADY managed to get to the Tiger machine's drop box via it's IP address.

But when I start copying a file into the drop box, after just a few seconds, I get the message "[my G4 computer name & IP address] via TCP/IP - The file server's connection has unexpectedly closed down".

If I copy a VERY SMALL file (say 5K) it goes across, but anything slightly larger that takes more than about 3 seconds, does not go through, because the connection is lost, giving me the message about the connection closing down.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is upgrading the G3 to System 9 (which I won't have time to do for a couple of weeks), and purchasing Shareway IP (which I don't really want to spend the money on if it's not going to work with Tiger)

I'd still like to know if you can GET a bigger file than you can SEND to the dropbox, because I have machines that do fine one way, but not the other way.

I can't get a file from the G3 because I cannot connect TO the G3 FROM the G4 at all. I have managed to connect FROM the G3 TO the G4, but I can't send a file across.

I CAN send files (in both directions) between the G4 (running 10.4)and my other G4 (running 10.3).

Well this is very weird. I can pull a file from the G4 to the G3, but I still can't push a file from the G3 to the G4. (same problem as before).

Thanks for your update-I think that's what BDaqua was trying to see if you could do.
There is an issue with certain aging operating systems when communicating with the more recent ones (sorry about the antique comment a few days ago)
