Apple News Buggy

I rely on Apple News to keep up to date with the news these days, but lately I’ve been having issues. The menu keeps refreshing without me touching the screen, and either kicks me out of an article halfway through or jumps to another article (usually the one that preceded it on the menu). It’s driving me nuts.

U.K. based. Currently running iOS 17.0.2 on a 14 Pro Max. The menu problem predates the update to 17, but the inability to read an article to the end is new. Have recent updates somehow increased screen sensitivity? I have a heavy duty aluminium case with protective screen lens.

I’m having the issue as well and as a software engineer I can tell you it has nothing to do with screen sensitivity because it doesn’t happen if I purposely attempt to reload the screen in an article so that is not how your app even works. It is some kind of bug in your app that in the past few days has refreshed the screen randomly for no reason when I’m in the middle of reading an article and more often than not redirects to an entirely different article rather than the Home Screen (not that would make it any better.) I have the latest version of iOS, restarted, and reinstalled the app. If Apple doesn’t want to take responsibility for their app malfunctioning I will simply delete and replace it with a news app that doesn’t randomly redirect me to another article.

There was a bug in a previous iOS where apps would randomly close, for example while typing away on WhatsApp. Sounds like a similar manifestation. Also paying for the news app so it needs fixing.

Same here. In the UK on an iPhone 11 (17.2.1). Doesn’t always do it. Just randomly and inconsistently (it’s not as though you can reliably replicate). It refreshes to the top of the menu screen (on main and following/topic screens). I can’t remember which iteration of iOS this started, but it’s been months.

Having the same issue. I will be in the middle of a crossword and it refreshes and loses all the work I did. Background app refresh does nothing to help.

Same thing in a news story... you will be reading and it refreshes on its own and either puts you back to the top of the story or literally to another story. it makes using Apple News not worth it. how has this not been fixed yet??

this doesn't solve the problem of the app refreshing on its own. It also happens in the MIDDLE of doing a crossword and when that happens, you lose EVERYTHING you have written. So it makes doing any crossword useless.

I’ve had this problem for months and it seems to have stopped by turning both live activities and background app refresh off.

I think I have found a work around. Others had suggested turning on background app refresh. This didn’t stop the issue for me, but has seemed to work is turning off live activities. This seems to be there to update the Home Screen when news stories change and seems to affect the app when you are in it.

Happening to me just today and I’m not in Apple News, I’m reading searched articles on Safari. In the middle of reading and it skips back to the search results or even back two or three pages in my history (as if I’d hit the back button but I hadn’t). 13, iOS is up to date. What the heck?!

As I reported this earlier, I should note that performance has improved, possible due to an upgrade, currently iOS 17.02.

I was being driven mad by this issue I read in one of the posts to turn on Background App Refresh and this fixed the problem.

Same here. Refreshed today multiple times preventing me from reading articles in their entirety. I've noticed that it seems to happen when I'm out and relying on cellular.

I’m ready to get rid of my iPhone over this issue with the news app. switching from story to story. This is something that just started happening and it is extremely frustrating.
