iphone 4 screen shattering!!!!

my iphone 4 screen shattered when it fell from the coffee table which is about a foot and a half high! apple went on and on about how tough the new screen was Rubbish!!!
when i went to a genius bar they had me backed into a corner and i had to pay $249 to replace my phone!
has anyone else had a problem like this?

I think if you do more research you will find there are many situations/stories of the glass breaking you'll find hard to believe. I did. And then I experienced it. I had a silicone case on my iPhone 4, and dropped it once in my driveway getting out of the car and thought for sure it was toast. Not a scratch. I changed cases (bad move)to the Body Glove clear plastic back and black silicone sides. Sitting in my office chair a moment ago, the phone slipped out of my hand, fell on my cushioned chair, and landed flat on the front on the hardwood floor. Maybe 2 feet drop and it seemed like slow motion. Completely shattered. I know someone who has this same case and had a similiar experience sitting in a chair dropping iPhone on a wood floor and shattered the back. The responses that "duh, glass will break when dropped" are wasting everyones time. We all know this. I think if the phone fell on the side first then landed on the front I think it would've been ok. If the phone falls flat, it is weaker.

I have the same case you were just describing. My phone fell 2 feet and the front screen shattered. There is no damage to the case at all, not even a scratch. I would be less annoyed if I had no case and it shattered. Off to the Apple store tomorrow to see what their thoughts are ... $249 is not what I am going to want to hear though.

I too have a somewhat similar experience.... a couple of weeks after i had my new iphone4 i had it my pocket and without any protective casing on it, i was sitting in my car(honda accord) and it slipped out of my pocket and fell on the parking lot ground. the back glass cracked from top to bottom, but everything else was fine... screen was ok.. i bought a black rubber case that covered the back so that was fine..... again just recently i had to run up the stairs and my phone fell out of my pocket again.. this time the front screen shattered... im not tall so it couldnt be that high, but the ground was really hard, i guess thats what did it...

all in all my iphone4 is cosmetically destroyed now, but i wouldnt say that the quality was all bad.... i swear i have dropped, banged and even overheated my phone a whole bunch of times and i am amazed it stayed intact for this long...

I bought Iphone4 a month ago. Today my phone was in my pocket. When I stand up, I hit the corner of my table and screen shattered. I got an appoinment from Apple Stoneridge Mall shop for repair. They were very responsive and they gave me a new Iphone FREE. I impressed with their service and fixed my problem in 5 minutes. I also bought Ipad2 today! Good job and great customer service Apple.

A few months back, one of my cow-orkers showed my his iPhone 4 and the broken screen. He asked me what to do about it. I told him to call the Genius Bar and schedule an appointment. When he asked me what to tell them, I replied "honesty is the best policy. Worst case, you pay the $299 out of warranty repair cost." He made the appointment and the next morning he was beaming and very happy. They replaced his iPhone for free. He told them teh truth that when he got out of his car it slipped and hit the pavement, and he took my advice and was nice to them not threating them or berating them for such a shoddy product. In the end the person behind the counter is key in determining if you deserve a break or if you were an a-hole who gets as much courtesy as you gave them...
