If your only reason for downgrading, and crippling your device, is that stupid switch, I feel for you. It was WELL DOCUMENTED that the switch was always meant to be a mute switch, and would be returned to that function as soon as iOS 4.x was brought to the iPad.
It is very easy to get to the orientation lock via the panel they designed for that purpose, from inside any app you are in. Double tap home and swipe to the right.
Maybe my iPad is deffective, but I have NEVER had to use the orientation lock, ever..
Giving up the folders, mail enhancements, security updates, multi-tasking, Safari enhancements, and more that come in iOS 4.2.1 for a stop gap hack that they only did because they could not release iOS 4 on the iPad at release just seems totally insane to me. It brings new meaning to the statement of cutting off ones nose, to spite ones face.
Richard, have you read the BIG thread on this topic?
I mean people are talking about 'saving their children from crying', 'never be able to read in bed again', 'the switch was the only reason I bought the iPad' .........
It's just incredible.
Like you, I have never ever used the orientation lock apart from trying it out at the start.
Agreed. The iPad has this really neat feature. All that you need do is to hold it in the preferred position and the display automagically orients itself to match your preference.
Like you I tried it out when I first got my iPad. I quickly concluded that it was stupid. Why in heck would I want to defeat the really neat automatic rotation? I haven't touched It since.
I guess you've never used your iPad lying on your side in bed to read. If you had opened your mind a bit, you wouldn't have concluded it was a stupid feature. There's a whole world of use at about a 45 degree angle that causes the autorotation to toss the display into an undesirable position. You may consider yourself enlightened and I pre accept your thanks for helping you see something you were having a hard time with.
I haven't really see this in my experience. My iPad seems just a snappy as it did under previous versions of iOS. My speed tests are in line with what I was experienceing under 3.2.2
Now I suppose it's possible that the iPad could slow up a little if you had a ton of Apps open and working at the same time. It could tax the memory (256GB?) and the A4 processor a bit more than when you were only able to run one App at a time. Stands to reason. But I'm pretty amazed I haven't really felt a noticable difference even when running several apps at once.
I'm hoping that the next gen iPad will have 512GB memory and hopefully a bit faster processor to keep up with more open and functioning apps. We shall see.
So because YOU or the next post don't ever use the switch, you STILL can't understand people that do? REALLY? Are you THAT limited? And you find a switch that PARTIALLY mutes the iPad less 'stupid'?
Looks like we have thousands who 'get it' and a few who don't, or can't.
What if... the switch was a mute switch to start with and Apple changed it to a screen orientation lock switch.
OH THE HORROR!!!
I like the new iOS. 1) Folders, needs no explanation. 2) The App Doc, now I can load the app doc with apps that I use daily. 3) I can import Flip videos using the Camera Connection Kit. The previous iOS didn't allow this. 4) Find a word on a web page and more... The new iOS brings more functions to the iPad that I didn't expect.
Back to the subject at hand, mine is still nice and zippy. Of course, I had to RESTORE the iPad to get the software installed. And because of the well known backup time problem, the only thing I had to restore was the system software. No big deal. Made sure I copied the saved photos back to my computer first. Nothing else on the iPad was unique, so it actually took less time than waiting 2 days for the backup.
HOPEFULLY, 4.2.1 will have corrected that awful backup problem. If you weren't one of those who experienced the backup problem, chiming in here would probably not be helpful. But if you DID, do you know if it's been fixed?
