Is it bad to use Fan Control?

So I was looking into running Boinc (donating CPU time to run science projects aka grid computing) on my computer and installed Fan Control so I turn up my fans to keep to comp cooler. I have hence been convinced that it isn't the best idea to run your CPU so high on an MBP since I didn't want to wear out the fan and/or damage any hardware near the CPU. I still have Fan Control installed. Is this okay? I have heard mixed things about manually controlling fan speeds? Should I go to the trouble of uninstalling, or can I just leave it on low settings? What settings should I put it on?
Thanks for all of your help!
And a shout out to all those students out there: Happy winter break! We made it!

Apple doesn't weigh in because they believe, I'm assuming, that the computer will last its expected lifetime if used in a "normal" fashion. Although you certainly can run software that drives temperatures up near the automatic shutdown limit, the computer isn't intended to operate constantly at those temperatures without the likelihood of a reduced life expectancy. But since every instance of any model is unique some may last longer than others under the same heat stress. So your computer may run without incident at those high temperatures while mine may quickly fail. How long any of them last is just a statistical probability. In other words, your mileage may vary. The thermal cutoff of the CPU is somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-125º C. You would need to obtain the Intel specifications for the particular processor in the computer to find out what it is. The computer's SMC firmware is designed to cause the computer to shutdown when the limit is reached to protect the processor and computer. So my assumption is that the computer is designed to survive that heat for a short period of time. It most likely is also designed with some "average" operating temperature. Since the computers are known to be designed for games, it's reasonable to also assume they can sustain the heat generated during game play for some period of time.

There is a lot of discussion about this topic because of the original issue with the 2006 MBP that clearly ran pretty hot. Since then it seems the heat issue has attached itself to every laptop Apple has made since that first model largely because most users spread the "rumor" without any knowledge of the facts. Some voided their warranty by disassembling the computer in order to "fix" what was claimed to be a problem with the thermal paste used between the CPU and GPU and the heat transfer mechanism. There were articles all over the place detailing what to do. Then somebody wisely did some scientific testing of the hypothesis and found that neither thermal paste nor any other change made a statistically significant change in operating temperatures. What did solve the problem was increasing the fans' idle speed from 600 to 2000 RPM.

But because the cat was out of the bag there was a slew of fan control software that came out together with the warnings that if you didn't use such software your computer would go up in smoke.

If I delete the app will my computer operate normally as if I never installed it? I noticed that the fans stopped spinning at one point and would kick back on after the computer got fairly warm? I decided to delete it completely and wonder if by doing so my macbook would just return to normal fan settings as if i never messed with it. Or is there someone else I have to do to return my computer back to the way it was before the app was downloaded?
