iPhone and iPad loses WiFi connection

I have an iPhone 4, and an iPad. We have 2 other iPhone 3GS and one more iPad in the house. We have a problem with WiFi. All iOS devices connect fine to our home wireless network. But very often devices lose connection to the WiFi.

Typical scenario is, I come home from work, my iPhone or iPad connects fine to the network, and I can work all I want on wireless. If I stop using the device, and leaves it alone for some time, and then picks up the device again, the icon on device says it is connected to WiFi - but it does not work. All actions on WiFi time out. Sonos tells me no Sonos devices are within range, Safari cannot find any web pages, apps cannot connect to servers etc.

If I stop the WiFi on iPhone / iPad, and starts it again, iPhone or iPad connects to home network, and works again. Also selecting "Renew lease" for the wireless gets it working again.

But it is very frustrating. ALL devices have this problem, some more often than others. At the moment my iPhone4 and iPad fall out 3-10 times a day.

My Wireless router is a Cisco (Linksys) WRVS4400n R2 on latest firmware (2.0.1.3). I don't see any problems in the wireless settings - but maybe I'm wrong.

We also have 5 PC's using same wireless, none of these have any problems with our wireless network.

Searched everywhere for an answer. Everyone always posts about resetting the iPad or perhaps even the router....some have even suggested replacing the router. This is all not true!

We just realized that the cause of the connection dropping was the stupid magnetic case!!!!

Case on, connection drops or can't connect. Case off the connection is stable and I can type this message! I'm assuming everyone is using the same cover which is why everyone is experiencing this connection issue. Yet no one is realizing this. When you think about it why would you ever place a magnet near an electronic device!? You wouldn't!

I smell law suit for selling faulty covers. Please everyone else try this out and let me know if it fixes your iPad 2 wifi connection issues. It fixed ours!!!

Any chance that we could get an answer from the Apple tech support team? I have an iPad 2 and iPhone 4. No magnetic case, same issue. After the device sits for a while, I have no network connectivity. I rebooted the router three days ago and everything worked great for three days. Today, the problem starts again. I know the urge to say it's router is overwhelming but I don't have this issue with any other device on my network. Something in the wifi code on iOS is broke. A fix would be nice.

I'm glad I'm not the only one facing this... i have the same problem,,, the pad shows a wifi connection and even signal but is actually not connected to my wifi.... even I dont use a magnetic case so I don't think that is what causes this. However it could be the magnets inside the pad that are responsible... would love to hear from Apple tech support.

My iPhone 3GS seemed to stop prioritising WiFi over 3g tonight. No idea why. If I turned Cellular Data off, it would appear to be connected to WiFif, but it wasn't (i.e. couldn't transfer any data over the network).

Fixed it by giving my phone a static IP address within the router config.

Still no idea why it suddenly stopped working normally. Didn't correspond to any phone or router updates or changes of settings. Just stopped connecting. Going to go and see if the iPad 2 has done the same thing. Although I've not had any problem previously with my iPad 2 WiFi connection, with or without the smartcover on.

Hope this helps someone!

No to add to the same old, same old, but I have the same problem.

My wife and I both have iPhone 4, and I have an iPad. All of them seem to loose connection even though we have full signal strength. A temporary fix is to turn on airplane mode, then turn it off, the phones reconnect for a while, but usually not more than 5 minutes. Very frustrating. 😢

I have an older D-Link 524 router, but 5 laptops and 2 Wii units connect just fine.

Come on Apple. Lots of people seem to have this problem, you need to fix it!

similar problem to most on this forum. happens on both ipad2 and ipod touch 4th generation. Only difference is internet connectivity doesn't go away- what I lose is connection with SONOS music player device.

This is fixed by renewing lease or disconnecting and reconnecting to network but would like to see this resolved by further upgrade. thinking of getting another router to see if that helps.

My iPad wifi worked fine for months then yesterday it started losing connection about every 20 min.. If I restarted the iPad or turned the wifi option on the IPad off and on it would be fine for another 20. Someone suggested rebooting the wifi router. (unplugging it, let it sit for a few min. Then plugged it back in.) So far I have been connected all day (8 hrs so far) with no problem. It's a simple thing to try, give it a shot.

1. Go to Settings->General->Reset

2. Then select "Reset Network Settings" (this will not erase ur devices content, music, videos, email, etc. It will only erase any WiFi networks you have defined).

3. Once your device completes the action and gives you the normal home screen or Passcode screen, go ahead and power your device down and once you are sure the device is fully powered down wait an additional 60sec to allow internal components to fully discharge.

4. After the 60sec is up, power on your device again and re-add any encrypted WiFi networks you had defined.

5. Enjoy the "back to normal" WiFi and 3G speeds like you had prior to the OS upgrade.*

I have not yet upgraded to the iOS5 and have experieinced this issue from day 1. It is extremely frustrating, and, given how many other devices I have connected wirelessly to the same WAP, is really unacceptable. What's more frustrating is that even when i go thru the whole process of erasing the key and re entering it, it will often times not work until it is well and happy to do on its own timeframe.

All you need to do is change the frequecy at which your wifi is broadcasting. This disconnect is caused by other nearby wifi signals or bluetooth crossing their signals with yours. Changing the frequency can be done by accessing your router's settings, usually by going to 192.168.0.1. This is why some people notice a fix when getting a new router. The signal is probably stronger or on a different frequency on the new router. Just change the frequency and save the 60 bucks for something else.

OK I have been having this problem for the last 3 weeks and yesterday I found a fix.

FIrst of all reset your network settings and let your phone restart.

Next switch of your home broadband ( I unplugged mine from the mains) and leave for a couple of minutes

Now switch of your device (mine is an iPhone 4)

Now turn your broadband back on

And finally turn your device back on and connect your wifi.

BIngo mine has been fine ever since.

For the sake of a few minutes it's worth a try.......good luck.
