You can pair it with only one device at a time...

I've had this problem, too, but eventually got it to work. Try resetting network settings at Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. You'll have to re-enter your wifi passwords after this, but it will probably fix your bluetooth pairing issue.
I've also found a few times that I had to turn the keyboard off (by holding button for a couple of seconds) and then back on for it to be seen by the iPad.

Have you gone into Bluetooth Settings on the MacBook and removed the keyboard? You can pair it with only one device at a time...

Yes, David. "It" referred to the keyboard. An input peripheral is going to pair with only one device -- computer, iPad, whatever -- at a time. The original poster will need to delete it from the computer before he can pair it with the iPad. Likewise when he's done using it on the iPad he will have to forget it there.

According to the keyboards user guide, the keyboard is discoverable when the indicator light is flashing. Are you trying to pair the two while both are discoverable?
Try resetting the iPad before trying to pair with the BT keyboard. Press and hold simultaneously the Home and Power buttons for 10+ seconds, ignoring the power off slider, until the Apple logo appears.

This is also not true. My Apple BT keyboard is paired with both my Mac mini and with the iPad. What it cannot do is be accessed by both the Mac and the iPad at the same time, so one needs to be asleep, off or out of BT range for use by the other paired device.

Sorry for sticking my oar in the water. Just glad it's working now, and that attending to which device it was paired with seemed to be the solution.
As you were.
