HDMI adapter does not work on IPad 2. Not unique to this cable or to my ipad

I bought the apple branded HDMI adapter for my new IPad 2. When I plug it in it will give me a black screen and will, at most, very very sporadically flash the ipad screen for about one second then go back to black. Before assisting please read below to see what I have tried already:

I tried the cable on 2 different IPad2s and an original IPad.

I tried a different cable of the same design on 2 different IPad2s

I tried using both cables on two different tvs and using two different hdmi cables

I also tried powering off

I also tried running for-sure-supposed-to-work apps (although the IPad2 should mirror so that was unnecessary too).

I took to the Apple Store and they had no clue what was going on either. Anyone know if this adapter is just a defective product in general? What other things can I do to put my IPad on the tv...it was a large part of why I bought it.

I have an ipad 1 and an ipad 2 (they are not with me so I can't five the exact IOS), I too tried the expensive Apple Digital AV Adapter (MC953ZM/A) - [Old Version] with both. When I first bought the adapter, using the Netflix app, with the ipad 2 it worked fine. I just plugged it in and got video and audio.

The next day I tried the adapter with the ipad 1 (I've got a bunch of apps on the older ipad) and was surprized to get the bubble that others have mentioned saying that 'the ipad is incompatible with this accessory.' (or something like that). So I went back to the ipad 2 and it worked for about a half hour (half way through the movie) and then the sound went off. The video was still working fine (even the closed captions scrolled nicely) but the audio stopped.

Completely bummed out, I reattached the ipad1, and to my surprise it worked - both audio and video. There must be something switching the audio off inside one of the components in the process. I doubt that it is in the TV. I don't know if there is a chip in the adapter, but if not then it has to be in the ipad(s).

Any further thoughts from anyone out there?
