Soft subtitles in videos app ios 5 is broken

In ios5 the soft subtitles are now in screen instead of under the screen. But there is also a fading behind it so you can see less of the movie which is annoying.

The big problem is when the subtitle is on more than one line, only the first line is shown, so you miss part of the text.

Can there be an option to put the subtitles back off screen, or turn at least the fading off.

Hi all,

still the same problem since iOS 5.0.1 : only the first line is displayed, was working fine before...

is there any update from Apple for a bug fix ?

btw, Videos in general are really not properly handled in iOS5... I just discovered if you want to be able to 'resume' where you left off, you have to download the movie from iTunes, not directly on the iDevice (so I'm not able to use the 'managed manually' feature and had to create an iTune Library) so it's becoming hard to manage iPhone & iPad separately...

very annyoing

Hi,

iOS 5.1.1 did not show the caption anymore so I followed advise given earlier to use Subler to add srt file. Still did not work until I followed another advise to rename the mp4 extension to m4v. It worked after that. My subtitles are 2 lines and they show fine, below the video.

The newly forged m4v shows subtitle in Quicktime, iPhone Simulator etc.

Something else. In previous iOS version the icon to enable subtitle was not available in Portrait mode playback. But in iOS 5.1.1 it appears, which is wonderful. In Landscape mode it shows but is behind the volume bar's right edge.

I wish Apple would let me programmatically turn on captions instead of rely on user to do it manually every time.

Do you get these issues even with the nightly build of Handbrake - both Subler and Handbrake use the same mp4v2 library for writing the subtitles. And the Subler author also works on the Handbrake project. I'd be surprised if it was still broken - although I haven't checked recently myself. If it does still happen on Handbrake then do ensure that they know about it - it will be an easy fix to correct.
