Why is there no iOS 6 update for the iPad 1?

Does anyone know why the original iPad can't be updated with iOS 6?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Apple frequently drops off support for older hardware models. Unfortunately, they dropped the 1st gen iPads from being updated to iOS 6. Often times the hardware isn't capable of taking full advantage of newer OS's. I'm not sure if this is the reason why they dropped the original iPad but the 3rd gen iPads are quite a bit more powerful and I can only assume that when Apple designed iOS 6 they wanted to take full advantage of the iPad 3's processing power.

The new iOS 6 will run on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5; the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad; and the fourth- and fifth-generation iPod touch.

I hope this answers your question.

Furious that original iPad will not work with iOS 6. Apple should correct this issue immediately. My device was only purchased a few years ago. Was an early adopter of the iPad and now getting punished for it. Was considering upgrading my iPhone and getting my wife one as well. Have to rethink those purchases if this is Apple's way of treating it's customers. Was considering new iPad as well but not if it will only be supported a couple of years. Always was loyal to Apple but will definitely investigate Samsung, Android, Microsoft, Roku, Amazon, etc devices if this policy isn't changed. DISGRACEFUL treatment of many of your (former?) best customers!!!!!!!

Ultimately we'll see if this strategy will hurt Apple. I have a gut feeling it will. The former customer centric, user friendly technology religion is going down the drain. Apple might think that they will leave it to the APP developers to create a version for IOs 6 and one for earlier version, like spotify did, for example.

But what they don't seem to understand is that customers don't care. All they notice is that some things don't work on their IPad 1. And, if you read through all the 5 pages of feedback, customers don't like it. How many will switch to other platforms or vendors? We don't know.

Unfortunately this is not the only case of horrible customer service that I had to experience lately. An update of my Ipod recently left it disfunctional. The "genius" at the apple store tried to fix it, then looked in a knowledge base, then punched in the serial number and then told me that the device is old and they can't help me. I was told I should buy a new one - I am not citing here what my reply was...

I am certainly looking into alternatives and deeply regret that I just bought an Iphone5 for my son.

Because Apple *****, that's why. Sooner or later I figured their arrogant preppie ways were going to come back around full circle, and here we are... Only Apple isn't hurting from this, their earlier loyal customers are. I'm phasing out all of my Apple products and headed over to the Land of Linux, Samsung, Windoze, Android, Asus, Sony, et al! I have already commenced the process: replaced iPhone 4 with Samsung Note 2 > replaced PowerBook Pro with Asus N-Series > will replace iMac with Windoze/Linux system when that day soon arrives. Apple uner Mr. Jobs = GREAT! Apple under Kook = WALKING DEAD... So long Apple, you've had a good run. RIP...

Just like our great United States, Apple, with all its faults, still has no equal. And if you think Microsoft, Android or even Linux (as outstanding as it is) are solutions to Apple's inequities, then perhaps a cold shower is in order to cool down and return to rational thinking. What bothered me is the fact that Apple could've treated iPad original just like they do iPhone in regard to iOS updates. Some of the newer iOS features will not work except on newer devices, but an iPhone 4S for example, still runs most of the newer iOS features quite nicely. It just is not a problem to implement from a technical standpoint. Quite clearly and not even thinly disguised, Apple wanted the revenue on new iPad sales. So, as vexed as I was over their decision, I'll grin and bear it until I replace my original iPad.

We hear a lot about mobile devise sales these days and who is outselling who changes monthly. What you don't hear from the media, however, is this- Apple's download revenue from apps is 3 times that of all other mobile platforms conbined!!! For those in Rio Linda, that means they have 75% of the app download market. That tells me what most consumers think about who has the quality stuff that makes a difference in their daily lives.

I agree that it is very shabby treatment of customers, and I never expected this from Apple. As to the comment that most people replace equipment every two years, had I bought the entry level iPad I probably wouldn't have a problem with that. However, I bought the top of the line and for $850 bucks I most assuredly expect to receive more than two years service from it. Yes it runs slower than the new iPads, but not that much slower. In any case, it should be my decision as to when I upgrade, and not one forced by Apple due to non support.

Well Apple...at least Microsoft recognize the 1st Generation Apple iPad short comings with lack of support...but like you mcros7...it's no consolation paying top dollar...a forced update...and no support or rebate towards a newer unit.....here's a copy and paste...let’s see if Apple will top this for our 2 year old outdated iPads!!

""Just a week ago, Microsoft launched a limited-time trade-in promotion, allowing users to get a minimum $200 gift card for trading in an iPad at one of Microsoft's brick-and-mortar stores.

Users enter the details of any devices they want to trade in. Clover Wireless creates an estimate of the value of those devices. Users then register their planned trades and are sent instructions on how to package and mail in the devices using a pre-paid shipping label. Users are required to show a proof-of-purchase of a Microsoft device (specifically, it seems, a Windows Phone and/or Surface tablet), which the users must buy within 30 days of the date when they ship their old devices to Clover Wireless. Within 60 days of receipt, Clover will send users their rebates in the form of a prepaid Visa card.""

No problem... I’m not a fan of the way Apple does business...and every ear in my neck of the woods hears about my discontent with the company.... it’s a sad day when the "clone" has better support than the high priced Apple!! Maybe Apple can learn their lesson from China...where the sale of the “Red Rice Phone” is kicking the butt out of the iPhone 5C sales!!

I'm not worried for your lock of commitment towards your first supporters, all of us that took the desition to buy iPads first gen, iPas 2, iPhone 3GS, iphone 4 and 4s wich I purchased to every member of my family. And you guys turn treir backs on all of ***. I know for fact than all your new customers eventually they will find out about your strategy that is not to supports them with the apple products after a couple of years. Then they will take the same desition that many of us are taking the desition to try different products.
