Why is there no iOS 6 update for the iPad 1?

Does anyone know why the original iPad can't be updated with iOS 6?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Apple frequently drops off support for older hardware models. Unfortunately, they dropped the 1st gen iPads from being updated to iOS 6. Often times the hardware isn't capable of taking full advantage of newer OS's. I'm not sure if this is the reason why they dropped the original iPad but the 3rd gen iPads are quite a bit more powerful and I can only assume that when Apple designed iOS 6 they wanted to take full advantage of the iPad 3's processing power.

The new iOS 6 will run on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5; the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad; and the fourth- and fifth-generation iPod touch.

I hope this answers your question.

"You" read all the posts....and if you want to buy an Apple product...that's your choice....but most that posted in this forum have their eyes opened by Apple's customer care......you think the Apple human resources don't read the forums...at least venting here is about the only satisfaction you'll get in return for you high priced iPad 1st generatin!!

I just can't understand the thinking by those at the top at Apple. My husband bought me the nicest model just 2 years ago and at that time we had to spend a pretty penny for it! Now, being an early adopter of the iPad, right out of the gate, I am now unable to even find a case or a keyboard that works to replace the one that came with it! And now I realize that because I bought one of the first iPads, I am also punished with the fact that Apple thinks it is not important to give me any software updates! Some of my apps are now not working because of the lack of updates and my iPad is basically not worth ****! Call me ****** off, Apple! And, NO, I DO NOT STILL THINK YOU ARE PRETTY. THE SURFACE IS LOOKING REALLY HOT ABOUT NOW.

Yes, I am disgusted too. I bought my iPad just 26 months ago and can no longer upgrade IOS. Mine was new from Curry's, but bought 6 months after the iPad 2 came out so - cheap (like me)!

I am very unlikely to buy Apple again. Only 18 month currency is not acceptable for such an expensive product.

But, also I am finding it more and more frustrating.

It often returns to the homepage (I assume the application crashes. This seems to be getting worse - probably because I'm not on IOS 6!

I'm planning to buy a new Nikon camera with wifi - but their iPad app need IOS6! The latest game my daughter has referred me to needs IOS6. and Applications that will not run on IOS 5 are becoming more and more common.

It's a 64Gb iPad that takes an absolute age to synchronize and it is so messy (even when possible) to copy stuff on to it from my PC and camera in any other way 'cos Apple want you to use synchronize.

Maybe less important but really frustrating is the lack of a numeric pad or even key row on the keyboard and the way the letters are always display in capitals even when the ketboard is in lowercase. Compare this with the Andoid keyboard with both a numeric row AND the correct representation of the function of each key displayed on that key.It would SO, SO EASY to fix - but have they? Now - b***er that customers let's just make money.

And have you noticed no spoll (sic) check on the forum - cheap.

And have you seen how disgustinglly scruffy their top management and technical staff are at their conference! At work fine, but at a conference they should appreciate the importance that appearance can play for a lot (I realise not all) of their audience.

Anyway, Apple, for God's sake please get your finger out and show you care about your image and existing customer base. Oh, hang on, you don't do you!!!!!!

When the update stoppage originally happened I was very angry, and I posted here about it....i think they could have carried the original iPad through ios 6,...but they dumped us prematurely..... however, I am not that knowledgable about what the components of the original iPad are capable of handling....I think we all accept that it's not capable of ios7 updates...there have been so many advancements/changes that I am guessing they are completely incompatible. Let's face it...the first iPad doesn't even have a camera. What they should have done to show good faith to customers who had their device less than 3 years, is to offer two or three hundred dollars on a trade in or just a flat out discount of $200...they can afford to do that and customers, while maybe not thrilled, are not totally ticked off.

Apple has decided to stop making updates for the iPad 1. Since the iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad Mini, and iPad Air have came out, Apple has assumed the iPad 1 was done anyway and people would upgrade to the newer versions. I, myself, have an iPad 1 and am upgrading to a Mini. This is why they stopped updating the software for th first generation iPad.

Thetechnologypro says our iPad 1s are too old! Well, maybe they are, but they shouldn't be!

The iPad one 3G first went on sale in February 2010 and was replaced by the iPad 2 in March 2011. IOS 6 came out September 2012 - only EIGHTEEN months after they stopped selling the iPad 1 and, worse, less than 3 years since they sold the first one. THIS CANNOT BE CONSIDERED OLD IN A FAIR MARKET.

My wife's Windows PC was bought in December 2006 and runs XP (which is still supported) and is still capable of running, not just XP, but also Vista, WIndows 7 and WIndows 8. All these later operating systems are fairly significant changes on XP (though Vista and 7 are fairly similar). So the latest Windows system can still run on a 7 year old, medium spec PC.Surely, it is not beyond the technical capabilities for Apple to match this, so their failure to do so is clearly a straight marketing ploy. Stop iPad 1s from upgrading and they'll sell more Ipad 4s, Airs and Minis.

More significantly than this, the Applications you can install/buy for Windows are, with very few exceptions, backward and forward compatible and suitable for systems right back to XP through to Windows 8. Why? because the developers know that Microsoft still support XP so the investment is justified. (It's not just their customers Apple are failing, it's also their third party developers).

Don't bother to quote the increased processing power and hardware capability. Modern Windows PCs are experiencing the same exponential growth as the iPad and still maintain acceptabe upgradeability and support. (According to bench marks, the dual processor A5 introduced in the iPad 2 is only 66% faster than the iPad 1 - which is similar to the Windows PC growth rate over 15 months. I acccept that the graphics power is 3 times faster, but that is only significant for people who want to play high res videos - which I, and many other iPad users, do not).

I believe it is no coincidence that the iPad Mini and iPad 4 come out within about a month of IOS 6 - just when iPad 1 users began to realise their upgrade path had been closed by Apple. I guess Apple thought they would buy a new one and pass their old iPad 1 on to their kids, spouses and even grandmas. Unfortunaetly I fear many of them did, which only encourages Apple to do the same again. - How long before FrederickRechids Mini (see above) cannot be updated - 2 years time on current form.

Yes, Apple have forsaken their customers in favour of money. - But then, perhaps they always did?

P.s., I am not arrogant enough to use a name like thetechnologypro, but I have been working in tech support of computers since 1966 (IBM mainframes through mini-computers to PCs) until I retired in 2005 since when I just play with PCs (they wouldn't let me near a mainframe now). I suppose I could change my name to OldTechGeezer though..............

Pretty obvious....Apple knew well before March of 2011 that the iPad one was outdated while they still sold them off at an outrageous price....my wife bought mine Christmas of 2010....to find the iPad two comming out three months later...full price....extended warranty on our part....no support and no rebates towards a newer version for us iPad one users....leaves me with a rotten taste in my mouth for "Apples" :-((

Sent from my iPad.....operating system 5.1.1........and forever holding :-((

Apple thinks we are stupid ..but I'm not and this is Apple fault for putting out junk ...they new this is a problem the tech here think is something else ,,,not very good techs Apple put out a iOS that can't handle big packages simple this is why the IPad one right threw to air crashes white wash it all they want ..we ppl that have IPad know the truth

Why is there no iOS 6 update for the iPad 1?
