Why is there no iOS 6 update for the iPad 1?

Does anyone know why the original iPad can't be updated with iOS 6?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Apple frequently drops off support for older hardware models. Unfortunately, they dropped the 1st gen iPads from being updated to iOS 6. Often times the hardware isn't capable of taking full advantage of newer OS's. I'm not sure if this is the reason why they dropped the original iPad but the 3rd gen iPads are quite a bit more powerful and I can only assume that when Apple designed iOS 6 they wanted to take full advantage of the iPad 3's processing power.

The new iOS 6 will run on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5; the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad; and the fourth- and fifth-generation iPod touch.

I hope this answers your question.

Well they used people like us for a test base for their product....and the loyal Apple supporters that purchased the iPad first generation....what thanks did we get....discontinued support....and told to get over it?? Sorry Apple...I expect a lot more for my hard earned dollars....that's why the original purchase of what I thought was a high end product....I guess reputation isn't everything....and the good folks of Apple don't need me to make a fool of them....they're doing an excellent job of that on their own!!

I too would like to be able to put iOS 6 on an original iPad. My partner just got the air and I thought I could put her old device to use. Unfortunately, parallels acces the app I was interested in, requires iOS 6. So I'm left trying to think of a use for the thing. I own a Samsung galaxy tab II which has been upgraded to ICS, but it has always been so buggy and full of glitches that it's too painful to use. I sympathise with those who waNt the upgrade but at least the iPad has had over 3years of os upgrades. More than can be said of any android or windows mobile device. I'm not an apple fan but I use a few of their products because they tend to be easy to use and I spend less time on maintenance. I grew up in a time when people kept their cars and fridges and tvs for decades, but those times are long gone. For over twenty years I have been advising clients to think of tech as consumables, rather than capital investment. Hopefully, future generations will find a way to maintain progress and technological development without so much waste, but for now, we'll just have to buy new stuff, more often.

A first gen 64Gb 3G iPad retailed for over £600. Only corporate fat cats (and idiots) would regard that as a consummable price. Mere mortals like us (me) would not.

The trend of technology to consummable items is happening - I don't dispute that. But why is it happening? Simples - because prices are dropping - but not in the world of Apple where money rules and customers can fall by the wayside as long as the AppleCats are fat.

That's why I have now bought an Android 4.2 9.7" XGA tablet. So much nicer and friendlier than the iPad. No more hours wasted synching because Apple denies you direct control over files. No more finding a nice looking App only to find it needs IOS6 or even 7 which now seems to me to apply to at least 2/3rds of all iPad apps. And it only cost me £120 rather than the £400-£650 for a new iPad. Perhaps £120 could be considered consummable?

'Nuff said.

Not yet decided what to do with my old iPad. If it's so good, perhaps fluffylucy would make me an offer? If not, I've noticed my desk is developing a wobble...............

Planned obsolescence is a *****!

There is a lot of hardware limitations on the original iPad. There is no camera on the 1st generation iPad. iOS 5.1.1 sometimes won't need a camera, and the iPod touch 3rd generation only supports up to iOS 5.1.1 because of a lack of camera. It also have no video recording. All iOS 6 devices have it except the iPod touch 5th generation 16GB (May 2013-June 2014) have no rear camera, but have front. That is unlike any other kind of device.

Why is there no iOS 6 update for the iPad 1?
