No it's not.
Have to use adapter.
Edit previous post. Message I get is 'no photos to import'. No message about 'trust this computer'.
Hey all - ok, I am on iOS 7.03 now - I just wanted to show a friend that Lighning CCK doesn't work on my iPhone 5 - and.. well.. starting with 7.02 it worked. for "no reason".
it did not refuse the CCK when plugged in, it accepted the LPK25 (a keyboard controller) and finally I was just happy.
so - it looks like Apple did something...
I am sure they still won't tell us we CAN use it but seems like it works now on iPhones 5 series as well.

that "photo issue" looks strange- you are using the USB-CCK-Lightning one, not the SD Card-one?
does it tell you when the lightning has just been connected to the phone and THEN connect your USB device.. and THEN the message pops up or just when you have the CCK connected and nothing else?
Have now upgraded both iPad and iPhone to7.0.3 and the problem with photo transfer persists. The error message 'no photos to import' is seen on the iPad after the CCK connection is made to both devices. Am using the USB-CCK adaptor.
The CCK connector behaves as expected, with respect to photo transfer, when connecting two 30 pin devices.
Problem sorted.
The issue relates to the ’trust this computer' message which needs to be accepted when setting up the iPhone. This dialog can only be accessed, if not accepted during initial setup, by a complete restore of the phone with the message being accepted during the restore. Thanks to those who helped with my dilemma.
