Notes Doesn't Sync with iCloud

I'm trying to sync notes between all my devices, including 2 MacBook Pros, iPad and iPhone via iCloud. A few days ago they stopped syncing. I lost a lot of work on my Mac when the notes went missing after relaunching the app (the notes were gone). Then I realized that none of the devices are synching notes with iCloud (checked at iCloud.com). I disabled iCloud Note in Mac and tried to re-enable it and this is what it says: "Notes can’t be enabled at this time."

Does anyone have positive experience solving similar issues?

So I see that I have one iCloud account but the other two accounts don't seem to be

iCloud accounts. Would it help to have the 2 accounts on the bottom made into

iCloud accounts? How would I do this. The thing that plagues me is the lack of

syncing on Notes and Contacts and I have already checked off all the boxes as

suggested previously and have also done the Restarts recommended.

Hi John,

Your iCloud account is tied to your AppleID, so even though you have three email accounts set up, only one would be an iCloud one.

As far as your issue with not being able to sync Notes and Contacts, you have not mentioned what device you are trying to sync them with. What have you checked on the device? Have you tried restarting it? Also, have you checked your iCloud account on the web to see if your Notes and Contacts are in iCloud?

If you can let me know where these things stand, we can go from there.

Thanks for the response GFM. I have spent the last hour fiddling with the

iMac

iPhone

iPad

Actually, the situation is better than I thought at first glance but before I elaborate, let me answer the questions that you posed. On the iMac, System Preferences, iCloud - I have the following checked

Mail

Contacts

Calendars and Reminders

Notes

Safari

On the devices, iPhone and iPad, Settings, iCloud, I also have all of the above checked. Now here is the odd thing GFM. With all the experimenting I referred to above, I have found the following -

Reminders - sync perfectly across all 3 gizmos

Contacts - sync perfectly across all 3 gizmos

Notes - when entered on the iPad or iPhone sync perfectly across all 3 gizmos - BUT -

when using the iMac to make an entry in Notes, these do NOT sync to the Pad or the Phone.

So if we could work out this one last little glitch, I would truly be a happy camper and this

is important to me since I do most of my note entries on the iMac and need them synced

to the portable devices and not the other way around.

So for Notes, I seem to have one way syncing from the portables back to the iMac but NOT

in the other direction. I have the feeling that we're almost there with a solution and any

help in this regard would be appreciated.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. All 3 machines were restarted as per your suggestion.

Hi John,

OK, when Shiblee and I worked through this for his problem, he indicated that his router firewall was causing the issue. As I had indicated to him, on the Apple Support page for iCloud, both Notes and Mail are listed together. A specific article on Notes indicates that they are actually using the email system to move the data between the Mac and devices:

Notes are associated with an IMAP email account or iCloud account. To sync Notes, enable Notes for each account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars or Settings > iCloud.

So, a couple of things to check:

1. On your devices, in Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars, under the Fetch New Data option, is that option set to "Push". If it is not, you need to change it to that option on your devices.

2. When I was working on this with Shiblee, we notices that his Incoming Mail Server in Mail was not being recognized when he tried to re-add the account, and we discovered that his address and mine were not the same. However, I don't really know enough about the server addresses to know if this is normal or unusual - he did post back, though, that his router firewall was blocking his Notes, and although he didn't go into details, I'm wondering if he changed the server address to be the same as mine and that fixed it. If the first option does not fix your issue, post back and we can give it a try - if it is not the right answer, then you can always set it back to the way it was....

But, fingers crossed that you just don't have your email set to "Push"!!!

P.S. - Adorable baby!!!

Wow - I just returned from a 2 hour X country ski (Whitehorse, Yukon). There is a lot in your last letter that I have to attend to but I don't have time for it at the moment. I'm intrigued by the "adorable baby" reference. As far as I know, the only graphic that I posted in my messages was the window from Mail - Preferences - Accounts. So who is the adorable baby?

Hi GFM - Ah yes, I had forgotten that I had placed that photo of my grandson into my Profile section. When I did it, the intent was to have a little graphic of him showing with each of my posts in the same manner that you have a picture of your kitty showing. Even though the picture is in my profile, it does not show up with my postings as I had hoped it would. Isn't that the point of putting the graphic in there?

Back to the business at hand. I checked, and both the Phone and Pad are set to Push under the Fetch New Data Option. As explained previously, the only thing that does not sync is a Notes entry on the iMac. Note entries on the Pad and Phone do sync with the iMac and the same for deleting Notes so it's a very specific lack of syncing. Unfortunately, it's the most important one in my case.

Hi John,

You can select a "predefined avatar" (I used to have the yellow rubber duckie - it was really cute), until you have a certain number of points accumulated for questions answered correctly or helpfully. I would have included a breakdown of the various levels, but the server for the Community tutorial site doesn't seem to be working at the moment.....Anyway, once you get the required number of points, you can add any image you want to the end of the avatar list on your page, and use that as your custom avatar....

So for the Notes issue, I guess we should just try the deleting and then re-adding your iCloud email account on your Mac....

That may clear it up....(fingers crossed!) I've searched the Community for this issue, and could not find any other answers....

Looks like I'll never be able to use the baby picture if I have to get points. 😢

Hi John,

Well, I looked into this a lttile further, and I'm concerned that if we delete the acccount it will delete all the mailboxes on your computer. I don't think we discussed whether or not you have a firewall set up on your Mac....

If you do, try turning it off altogether to see if that helps at all (much safer and less potentially adverse than deleting and rebuilding your mail - especially if you have a lot of mailboxes like I do....).

If you do not, then let me know. We can see if Shiblee is still watching this post so he can explain exactly what he did to disable the firewall on his router....that fixed his problem, and maybe that is all you will need to do. I'd just rather not tell you to do something that I'm not willing to do first on my Mac....

Let me know what you think!
