After ios7 update, mail app showing 1 unread msg but there are no unread msgs. Fix?

After updating to iOS7, the mail app icon shows I have 1 unread message, however, all emails have been read. I logged in on the PC to make sure all were read. This also happened with a previous Android phone I had and there was no fix :/ I have tried restarting the phone and app itself but this hasn't worked so far.

iPhone 5, iOS 7

Go to the bottom of your inbox and select Mark.

Then select Mark All, Mark as Unread, and then Mark as Read.

My mom just purchased an Iphone and had the same problem, showing over 2,000 unread messages, when she had none. She only uses gmail, and this is how I fixed the problem:

1) I deleted the gmail account on her Iphone.

2) I logged on to her gmail account on the computer. There I discovered she not only had an inbox, but she also had a second inbox for messages from social networks and a third inbox for promotions. I guess that all emails in gmail went to her inbox first, and then copies went to either the social email box or the promotions email box. Anyway, in gmail I went to settings -> inbox and deselected Social and Promotions. This left only the Primary box selected. I saved changes.

3) I deleted her Trash and Spam email boxes.

4) I then set up her gmail account on her iphone.

The unread message count at this point was correct and the number of emails in her gmail inbox on the iphone matched the number that showed in her gmail account on the computer.

Hope this helps.

iPad 2, update to iOS 7.1, suddenly mail shows no messages (all were deleted from the ISP's pop server) but 9,826 unread ???

So none to mark as unread or move to a folder on the server via webmail.

Tried the disable the account in settings, close and open mail app, close it again and re-enable account and restart app, no change.

Do that again with a reboot of the iPad in between, still no change once re-enabled and app started.

Others have tried deleting and recreating the mail account without success.

Doesn't seem much else to try.

It seems that this is just a broken app.

Any other suggestions?

Having deleted all emails from the server and iPad, there was one thing suggested in some posts we could not try till some more emails came in.

Access Pop server via webmail, mark all messages as unread, then all as read.

After a short while the phantom unread notifications disappeared.

Some people found some phantoms came back after more emails came in, but that hasn't happened here, so far.

After ios7 update, mail app showing 1 unread msg but there are no unread msgs. Fix?
