Cannot mirror to Apple TV after iOS 7 for 5s, 5, 5 and iPad

Hi,

I have issue connecting with Apple TV for mirror function.

My Apple TV version is MD 199LL/A, software version 6.0(6645.65), just updated yesterday.

Before I updated to 6.0, and updated my iPad (3rd gen), my iPhone 5, and iPhone 4 to iOS 7, all Apple TV function worked well. I can easily mirror iPhone 5 or iPad to my TV for playing Asphalt or other games, and can AirPlay video and play music. However, when I updated all these three devices to iOS 7 on 09/18, the Apple TV CANNOT mirror either device at all. I tried several times plugging and unplugging cables, still didn't help.

Then I found the Apple TV software update yesterday on 09/20, I updated the Apple TV to 6.0, and bought a new iPhone 5s, with iOS 7.0.1, but the mirror function still didn't work. I tried iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPhone 4 and iPad again with the updated Apple TV 6.0, none of them can be mirrored to the TV, though AirPlay function fully worked.

Are there anyone came across the same issue with the mirror function?

Thanks a lot!

If you restart the Ipad the mirror will only work for a short time and then I get a blank screen. The audio isnt' affected but the video is. If I restart the Ipad 3 by turning it off and on again the video will return but if I turn mirroring on and off again several times it looses it and then you're forced into a restart of the Ipad again. This *****.

Also I am having an issue with Apple TV not being recognised by Itunes on my Windows 7 machine. All my Apple devices see it but not Itunes. I have tried everything several times and nothing works. Even following the troubleshooter doesn't bring it back. I also tried something that worked for other in deauthorizing the computer but that didn't work here either.

So two things are really annoying now.

I was having the same issue after updating all devices and apple tv to 6.0. The solution is very silly, the upgrade changes the airplay settings and turns it off. All I did is go to Apple TV setting -> Airplay and click on it to turn it back on.

Now my ios7 devices detected airplay, I can see the airplay icon when I swipe the screen up.... And back to streaming ;)

Cheers

Berguido... thanks for the advice but I can see the airplay button on my control centre. I can click it, and sent audio to the Apple TV but what happens is the video doesn't get sent. If you restart the Ipad, and then try it, it works for a few minutes, but if you click it on and off a few times, the video goes to black and only the audio is sent. The only way I have found to correct it is to restart the Ipad. It's likely the Ipad because restarting the Apple TV 2 device doesn't fix it. Only restarting the Ipad does.

Got the same problem you have. Pretty sure it is not about router or ATV, seems to be an IOS 7 issue. Before IOS 7 no problems at all, now this problem is creeping in. Got 28 students working with iPads, 4 share the problem by now. Tried different ATVs with different iPads and different routers (apple and non-apple), still result was the same. Rebooting iPad helps for between 3-5 "mirrorings", then black screen again and iPad starts to react slowly to input. Any help?

My wife's iPad at school is having the same problem now with iOS 7. With iOS 6 she could mirror to ATV with no problem. She called in a panic the other day saying her screen went black. After restarting her iPad all seemed to be working. However, a couple days later the problem came back. It only seems to affect mirroring because I was able to stream YouTube videos to the ATV without mirroring with no problem, even when mirroring wasn't working. My guess is that it is an iOS issue that only shows up after repeated uses of mirroring without a restart. We have two other iPads that are able to mirror when the main school iPad isn't working. Once again, after a restart everything works for awhile, but this situation is not good for a classroom where even the slightest delay to restart the iPad can disrupt the whole class. Hopefully a fix is in the works.

Setting Up Apple TV Using an iOS Device

Apply these troubleshooting steps to issues using an iOS device to set up Apple TV:

  • Ensure that the Apple TV is an Apple TV (3rd generation) and has Apple TV Software 6.0.
  • Ensure that the iOS device has iOS 7.

Note: You cannot use iPhone 4 or iPad 2 to set up Apple TV.

  • Complete these steps on the iOS device:
    1. Ensure that you're signed in to the iTunes Store account that you want to use with Apple TV.
    2. Verify that both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, and you are connected to the Wi-Fi network that you want to use for Apple TV.

Note: You do not need to connect Apple TV to a Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection to start or complete the setup.

  • During setup, keep the iOS device within 10-15 feet of your Apple TV.
  • If you move the iOS device out of range or the setup doesn't complete, do the following:
    1. Disconnect Apple TV from its power source, wait a few seconds, and then reconnect it.
    2. Restart the Apple TV setup process.
  • If you still can't set up Apple TV with the iOS device, use the Apple Remote to set up Apple TV instead.

AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring

For issues using AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring, apply the following basic troubleshooting steps:

  • Verify that your AirPlay devices have the following:
    • The most up-to-date software or firmware
    • Wi-Fi enabled and are connected to the same Wi-Fi network
      • Check the Wi-Fi network names on your devices to confirm.
      • Check Internet or network connectivity on all devices.
    • AirPlay enabled
      • Enable AirPlay on Apple TV in Settings > AirPlay.
      • AirPlay is always enabled on an iOS device or Mac. The AirPlay icon appears if the iOS device or Mac is connected to a Wi-Fi network that has an AirPlay-enabled recipient, such as Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generations).
  • You can temporarily disable firewalls and security software on the Wi-Fi network and devices.

Firewalls and security software might block ports that AirPlay uses to stream content.

  • If you want to use AirPlay from a third-party app or a website in Safari on your iOS device, confirm that the app or website is AirPlay-compatible.
    • Refer to the app or website developer for information specific to AirPlay.

Bring up your iPad home page (or any other page) put your finger on the black border outside the page and at the bottom, then swipe upward and you will get a toolbar appearing with the iPad mirror symbol showing. For starters you might have to do this upward swipe several times to get the toolbar, but once achieved it becomes easy.

For people who have tried all troubleshooting steps, here's some advanced workarounds.

Make sure your router has the following ports open:

These network ports are used by Apple TV for communications on your network.

  • TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.
  • TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
  • UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.
  • TCP port 80 is used for communicating with podcast servers.
  • TCP port 80 and 443 are used for basic and secure communications with the iTunes Store via the Internet.
  • TCP port 53 is used for regular DNS.

These are well-known ports used by Apple products, like iTunes. If you can use all the features of iTunes, these ports are likely already open on your firewall or NAT router. Note: These ports may also used by other services such as YouTube and Flickr.

This solved our issue where we had zero airplay activity on any devices.
