10.4.10 Snap Crackle Pop

Just updated to 10.4.10 and now my mini entertains me with random popping noises from the speakers, just as if the audio port was turning itself off and on in minute intervals. Drives me bonkers.

One thing to try... open up the Utilities folder and start the Audio/MIDI Setup app.

In the "Audio Devices" tab, select "Built-in Output" where it says "Properties for:". Then, where it says "Audio Output", toggle the number in the "format" pulldown (go between 48000 and 44100, then leave it on the lower one).

See if that solves the issue. I had some crackling on my system, and when I did that, the crackling went away. It may not be the same thing as yours, but hey, why not give it a try?

Yeah this is a bit ridiculous, Apple needs to fix
this, it can't be that hard.

Is will be hard for Apple to fix this if the problem is incompatible or corrupted software users have added to their Macs, which is likely the case unless everyone using a particular model has the problem. Every update Apple has ever released causes this kind of complaint. While occasionally it really is caused by a bug in the update, overwhelmingly, it is not.

I suggest you folks with the problem go with the odds & look for an app, extension, startup item, or the like you have in common & see if removing it solves the issue.

Just another data point. Booted into a backup of my baseline 10.4.9 volume and ran Disk Utility on the baseline, repairing the disk and permissions without incident (nothing to fix WRT to the disk). Backed up the baseline installation using Carbon Copy Cloner 3, beta (16 GB in 21 minutes), booted into it, and all mimicked the original. Downloaded the COMBO updater, launched it, and updated the baseline. Booted back into the baseline, repaired permissions, and restarted. Everything, including Safari 3 beta running as expected. Just another routine, safe update.

Also, I noticed my battery never goes over 98%
anymore, even though it is always plugged in.

This is an artifact of how battery charging works.

If the battery charge is too high, the battery will never be "topped up" to 100%.

Unplug your power cord and use your machine until the battery drops down to 90% or below; when you reconnect your power adapter your battery should recharge to the 100% level.
