10.4.10 Snap Crackle Pop

Just updated to 10.4.10 and now my mini entertains me with random popping noises from the speakers, just as if the audio port was turning itself off and on in minute intervals. Drives me bonkers.

Although I do agree that this is a usual suspect, that is simply not the case here. My system was just restored about a Week ago from the Restore disk, completely formated and reinstalled, then updated to .9 and then today .10. My system is as stock as it gets, and nothing is installed that wasn't installed previously. I don't use hacks or apps that alter the system or use KEXTs if possible.

That being said, the only software I have installed that could be using a KEXT is VM Ware Fusion.

This is looking like a definite Apple problem, if it is a problem, for all we know this could be the way they want the audio chipset to act, from here on out. I sure hope not, because it is not good.

I can't try it right now, but has anyone tried resetting the SMC or NVRAM? Just curious since it seems like a audio power save issue and those items would reset those settings... I have a project working right now that is going to take a while to finish, other wise I would try it.

Just adding my two cents to this. My intel mac mini is popping before any sound and also about 30s after any sound. I'd say that is probably a sleep issue as well. I tried the old apps called KeepSoundAwake and SoundOn that were designed to stop this behavior on laptops on battery power: KeepSoundAwake won't open, but SoundOn stopped the popping. Unfortunately, with SoundOn I got a little, almost inaudible 'tick' every 20s as the program pinged the audio... but it did stop the wakeup and sleep 'pop' completely.

The pop is really maddening... and I don't mean as in 'making me angry', I mean in the sense that would slowly drive me insane if I had to work at my computer for a long time right now. This teaches me not to hit that Software Update so quickly next time. I really hope they release a fix soon... like tomorrow.

I've always heard the popping sound... even before 10.4.10 or 10.4.9. I don't think it's a system problem... I think it's supposed to be there. If you all listen closely, preferably with headphones, when the system or an application makes a sound (i.e. a buddy signs on in iChat, or a message is sent/received in Mail) your speakers will go from "dead silence" to a normal air-distortion sound when a speaker is on or connected, the application sound is heard, the "popping" sound is heard, and finally the speakers go back to "dead silence." I think the popping sound (which to me sounds more like a tapping) is just the sound the system makes when it is running power to and from the speakers; which I can only imagine is to prevent the ongoing sound of air or hissing from speakers that are left on. The sound I hear isn't a popping, it's more of a tapping/clicking which definitely sounds man-made and programmed.

I'm not sure if I'm right. I hope others try listening carefully (with headphones) to see if I could be right, or if I have a colorful imagination lol.

Same pop/"thunk" issue for me with 10.4.10 on a 1st Gen. Black Macbook. This was not an issue with 10.4.9 and I have not added anything to the machine since the update an hour ago. It is also free of KEXT modifications,KEXT extensions, haxxies, etc.

This is very annoying and I am going to call Applecare in the AM. In the meantime, I am going to file a bug report and urge everyone else to do the same.

The common issue is an Intel machine with laptop
parts, running 10.4.10.

Well, not exactly. If you browse the topics in this Discussions area, you will find many reports of no problems at all with this class of Macs & this update. Therefore, this cannot possibly be the common factor.

Besides, it is incredibly implausible that Apple would somehow miss such an obvious issue that affected so many of its current products. Not impossible, but neither is it something I would bet on in light of reports of success.
