10.4.10 Snap Crackle Pop

Just updated to 10.4.10 and now my mini entertains me with random popping noises from the speakers, just as if the audio port was turning itself off and on in minute intervals. Drives me bonkers.

For our readers from digg and gizmo:

It only pops if:

- you have an Intel-based Mac.
- with whatever mobile audio chipset Apple is using for laptops and the mini.
- that's connected to external, powered speakers.
- and about 20 to 30 seconds have passed since the computer made the last sound, or right before it's going to make a sound.
- and you've updated to 10.4.10 by whatever means (software update or combo update doesn't matter).

...because for some reason or other, Apple applied the power saver function that would be useful for laptops running on batteries to all computers with that particular audio chipset, whether they actually are running on batteries or not.

The "pop" is the sound powered speakers usually make as they are turned on, be they installed on a computer or your car stereo, or your hi-fi system at home.

Add me to the list. I've got a 1.66 MHz Intel Mini. Popping sound is annoying.

As for this being a minor problem, or something caused by third party software, that's nonsense. In the last four days this thread has been viewed more than 25,000 times.

I'd say that this is a big problem.

Apple might do better by putting "Computer" back into their name and their business plan.

Ahh, OK. I got it into my head that there might be some as-yet unknown relationship between the external speaker issue and this MacBook Pro speaker noise burst I'm experiencing (each time it emerges from sleep mode).

Indeed, the MacBook Pro is the only laptop I've ever owned (and I've had several, including a PowerBook G4) where I've heard this noise burst at all.

People have done clean installs of OS X with .10 and
are getting the pop, and clean installs of .9 and not
getting it. I fail to see how that is not
comprehensive enough proof?

Please consider:

1. Among users of the listed models using external audio systems:

A. Some report getting pops only after the update.
B. Some report getting no pops after the update.
C. Some report the update eliminated pops present beforehand.
D. Some report getting pops both before & after the update.

2. Some users of PPC based computers also report getting pops after the update.

3. Among those hearing pops:

A. Some report only single pops just prior to & 20-30 seconds after playing sounds.
B. Some report other noises (crackles, multiple pops) not consistent with the above.
C. Some report the pops are inaudible on internal speakers, others say they are clearly audible.
D. Some report hearing the pops only when using the headphone/line output, others when using the optical output as well.
E. Some report their USB and/or Firewire audio interfaces are affected, others report theirs aren't.

And so on. Can a flaw in the update explain all these reports? Do you see a common cause -- or for that matter a common symptom -- in all of them?

There are people from all four corners of the planet
here, moaning, so that wipes the geographical claim.

That's the problem: there is a lot more moaning than studied analysis or troubleshooting going on. (There is some of the latter, so kindly don't say I said otherwise.) Many users report here little more than that they hear pops after the update with a particular model & demand that Apple fix it. This isn't very helpful for themselves or for the user community in general. In light of the above, the issue isn't that simple.

This is a user-to-user help forum, not a platform for moaning or ranting. (If necessary, refer to the terms of use, which make this very clear.) It has a very good track record of isolating & solving problems -- sometimes better that Apple Support's -- but only when people provide enough information to work with, keep an open mind, do not ignore whatever doesn't support their preconceived notions about causes & cures, & generally behave in a courteous, civilized manner. Please keep in mind that you are talking with other users, not Apple employees. We have no reason to "shill" for the company.

Is it possible that there is a flaw (or several flaws) in the update? Of course there is! But it is also possible that the same symptoms (note the plurality) have other causes that can be eliminated by user action. It is also possible, perhaps probable, that both are true.

So it really boils down to this: does it make any sense to just wait for a patch or live with a work-around until one appears? Let's say a patch does appear. Is it going to solve everyone's problem(s)? History strongly suggests otherwise. Should this happen to you, have you gained anything by waiting?

I have a 24" C2D iMac and no pops whatsoever. Im not sure if the 24" uses a different audio chipset than the others but i am using external JBL Creature Speakers with the internal audio card and it works fine, actually its working better than it has. I used to get loud pops when a system sound played and it made the most disgusting noise ever, but it hasnt happened since so...

I have actually had this problem with my C2D Macbook ever since i had it, but to tell you the truth it never really dawned on me it was a problem.

I hear the pops every time my the speakers wake from sleep. I thought it was Normal but now its starting to bother me.

I had this problem in 10.4.9 as well.

I also have a 20' CD iMac which never had any audio pops from any of the updates. Only my Macbook is the one having problems.
