Opinion on Panasonic AG-DVX100B

I'm looking to get a 3CCD camera but I don't want to pay a lot of money. My uncle who was nominated for an Oscar this year used this camera for the Documentary he was nominated for. What are the opinions on this camera?

imac, Mac OS X (10.4.9), Final Cut Express Installed

after reading only a couple of posts, i do agree, it's a great cam. coloring is fantastic, rich yet subtle, seems pretty durable etc. a cam ahead of its time competing with the HDV crap cams the only thing is it doesnt do HD.

yes depending on what's being referneced for color timing etc. on a final output/full online treatments the cam itself even in auto mode everything will make a person without any knowledge produce some pretty stunning images...just be on par with camera movement and framing, a little lighting (if wished to keep simple) and dont worry about pic quality. if ya feel more comfortable with focus n irising and white balancing etc. and then the proper post treatments, cross or upconversion that cam will SING!

and hey ITs FREE! or at least it should be being he was nom'd for an oscar, he's your uncle and you seemingly want to enter his world and can possibly use some help and mentoring.

In all of my research, I was told to check that the Panasonic AG DVX100B was made IN JAPAN and nowhere else, but also made FOR the U.S. (if you live there) so that the warranty you purchase will work.

In the end, I DID buy mine from Beach Camera after a lot of exhausting back-and-forth research on the internet, phone calls, etc., and I was very pleased with the price and the company. Also, the Mack extended warranty was on special at Beach.

I was going through B&H at first, but they were back-ordered and were unsure of when their next shipment would arrive.

Hope that helps.
Jess

P.S.
I have no $$ connection to any of the companies listed in this post.

Ok, here's an interesting prespective for you regarding this camera. I bought one - from an E-bay Retailer - brand new. The camera is great, I too heard really good reviews from field reporters, and various camera crew saying it was the best and the most affordable. However I took it to Sri Lanka (South East Asia) for some filming and within 6-8 months it began to fail - I had it checked out by the country's best electronic repair guys and it turned out that the PC Board had begun to corrode due to the high humidity in the climate (South East Asia is worse than Miami in the Summer!) - They said this sort of thing was common for Cameras designed in for use in the USA/Europe & Japan - So I asked what was the Best to get for these sorts of climates and his Response was SONY - they are designed for Humid climates. This would include shooting at sea as whereever there is high moisture the Panasonic's circuitry (Canon too) will corrode.

Hope this is helpful.
