...."Curious.
If your system worked perfectly fine before, why would you want to update it? What are you expecting the unit to do after an update, which you wasn't able to do before? Are you expecting it to grow wings, allowing you to burn, rip, read faster?"
More times than not, system updates improve the functionality, reliability or security of your Mac. There are two distinct opinions here. Some owners' would rather wait until there is clear evidence of no problems and those who simply want the latest updates when they’re published. It’s really not fair to criticize those who opt for the latter. There are a few self-proclaimed “gods” on this form who actually get offended when some members post a response that they don’t agree with.

I updated my superdrive using the 2.1 update and now
my drive does not work at all. Anyone have a
solution?
Macbook Pro 2.33 Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Same here. Installed the update & now my drive seems dead. Nothing happens when I try to enter a disk. Anyone know if there is a diagnostics for the drive? Is it possible to uninstall a firmware update? I really need my drive for important project. THANKS!
2.1 update killed my drive last night! Now I can't even get a disc into the drive for diagnostics or rebooting. Is this an installer virus????
How do I recover from this bizarre effect of the Apple update/ installer?
Just curious, has anyone here tried to install the update on a 17" MBP? This could well explain the problems. The description says it's only for the 15" models and Software Update shouldn't even offer it on a 17".
Why Apple don't answer to this trouble.
I (sigh) update superdrive andnow It is like without power.
I can't insert no disk.
I try to connect via firewire port an old Pocket CDRW but Mac Book Pro not recognize it.
Thanks
I'm experiencing the same issue. Now my drive won't accept any discs, but it does show up in the system profiler. I found an Firmware Restoration CD in the Apple support Downloads, but it's useless since my drive won't accept any discs.
Happened to me too: SuperDrive is completely dead after update. It won't allow insertion of any discs, just as if the computer was powered off. I guess that running the updater again might help, but the updater says that there are no drives to update.
Apple, please help!. This is serious. Resetting the power manager did not help either.
Information about internal optical drive:

Is there a way we can format the hard drive using an external dvd drive to run the OS X install? Cause if so that would delete the update and our drives will work again.
