Seriously, y'all wanna chill? The thing will work, it's not a dud, and sometime tomorrow you'll be singing its praises.
iBrick indeed. The car comparison is ridiculous... it's NOT like a dead engine, but more like buying a car and realizing the road you want to travel on isn't finished curing concrete yet. Not the carmaker's fault as much as it is the company who makes roads (AT&T).
apple should be emberassed about this! att knew this would be a big day and should have been prepared. I don't care if its new and they are overloaded, I didnt pay 600 dollars and 200 early termination on t-mobile for this experience. the faq in itunes says it should only take 6 hours, what are the chances of anybody apologizing for this?
p.s. - Yes, Verizon rocks. Harder if they only had better phones. Nonetheless, I'm probably in the minority who will simply get the cheapest AT&T plan only for the data and stick with my #1 VZ, but perhaps an idea. Already dropped $600 plus accessories anyways...
on line since 5am this morning. Same nonsense, get home, have to wait for further activation (ok, I am ok with that, because I am migrating). But get this, the FAQ tells me that I can use the features in the meantime (NOT!!)
Call ATT and they keep me on hold for 20 minutes while they try to transfer me to apple care because they can't help me with this. Finally get apple care, and the woman tells me, oh, sorry, but you can't use any features while you wait--well, hello, did I make this up, its in print that I can!!! Her response, I will make a note of this.
Unplugged and plugged back in the dock and it got me to the next step, but now it's saying that my iTunes Store Request can't be completed due to a timeout. Bah.
After 5 hours at the Apple store I got the message too. Received a message to call ATT about 3 hours later. Well, I finally got my activation email with a number to call. Spent 30 minutes with the ATT rep on the phone. Apparently my "plan is not compatible" with the iPhone. Ok, give me the new plan. Well, since I happen to be a 7-YEAR ATT->Cingular->ATT customer, I have to speak to a special department. THAT'S NOT OPEN TONIGHT.
Now going on 4 hours. Finally called the ATT iphone support and was told "There are over 30 million phones sold today and we're having to activate all of them so the system is overloaded. Even we didn't anticipate this demand."
I was told I would receive a $15 'courtesy credit' to my account, and that I should be activated 'ASAP' - but could be given no time. It was also made clear that this credit was at the discretion of the support rep and was in no way recompense for lost service or lack of performance on their part. She later asked if I wanted her to take it off my account since it was her choice and she could do so in an instant.
The rep clearly had received instructions not to hang up on me, as she hung on the phone waiting after asking whether I was satisfied - which I wasn't. She ended up hanging up on me anyway.
Nice job ATT. Lie to me first (30 million phones in one day? Even I'm not that stupid), then humor me, then threaten me with something I could care less about - $15.
And I've been giving them over $1200 a year for the past three years. They have
got to get a clue.
ok, so I have the "your activation requires additional time to complete" message in iTunes...no email from AT&T yet (other than the one that says "your activation requires additional time to complete" 😉
Should I just leave the phone in the cradle, iTunes up, and go to sleep?
It sounds like some people get an "activation has timed out" message eventually, if I get that, what should I do?
Others have said when they get the activation success email, there is a link in it to click ... should I do that with iTunes in its current state? Or get out of iTunes and click the link? or ...
Just concerned that if I don't have everything in the right state and do things in the right sequence, I'll cause more problems.
Has anyone successfully gotten an AT&T rep to credit their account? I've heard rumors of someone getting $80 off next month's bill. I'm going to DEMAND this. I'm an existing customer. And, of course, I have no phone working phone at the moment.
If I don't have the email by morning, the iBrick is going back in the box. They aren't getting my money for THIS. Thank you, American Express, for disputed charge services.
check it, wait for the e-mail to come through, an email from apple and one from at&t.
go to sleep, I am still waiting for my first number to be ported, then tomorrow if it goes through I can start to port my wifes #, if not, I am going postal.
Well, I have discovered, while waiting for something, anything to happen, that while the phone won't work as an iPod during this activation waiting game, it will function as a shuffle. You can drop music into it, and then plug in the included headphones and it will play through the music that you loaded. It's not much, but it's something.
