I'm wondering if enough of us complain, we could get some sort of credit from ATT for lack of service. And Steve Jobs ought to really hear from everyone, as should the news networks who so relentlessly supported the hype. I still have high hopes for this, but who would buy a new car that won't start? And I've opened the box so even if I'm not happy, I'm out $60.00 if I want to return it tomorrow.
I cannot believe that Apple wasn't ready for this launch. The problem seems to be with ATT. I too got the same activation message as everyone else seems to have gotten. OVER 4 HOURS AGO!!!! This is crazy. I bought mine from an ATT store 20 minutes from home. They couldn't even activate it from the store. A buddy went to Jacksonville, FL, a 3 hour drive, and his was working right out the door!
The idiots @ ATT haven't a clue.... be patient, is all they can say. I didn't pay 600 bucks today to have some $8.00 an hour drone tell me to be patient.
If Apple had made this thing work with ANY telcom company, all this wouldn't be happening right now.
OK... as you can tell, I am aggravated.
Just got off the phone with yet another ATT drone.... he said to be patient (imagine that) that it could take as long as 6 hours to 'port' my number from Alltel. We'll see......
Is it better to turn off or leave on my old phone? I am a Cingular customer transferring my number from my Treo 650 to my new iPhone. I even considered taking the SIM card out of the Treo, but then I figured if they couldn't access it through the network to turn it off and transfer my number, that might hold things up. SIM card is back on but phone is off on the Treo. Leave it off or turn it back on? It's been a couple hours of waiting so far.
I am having the same problem as a new customer. I would think that existing customers would not have any problems, but after reading the replies, wow. I was told 24 hours, but I am glad that I have another phone to talk on in the mean time. This is some BS!!!!
and it is sooooooo rude to not prioritize current customers who have been paying them big bucks over the years and give preference to people bringing them new accounts. Thanks ATT.
yes, very frustrating. Everything connected and now I'm waiting the extra time necessary to activate. So far nearly 3 hours. If I knew I wasn't going to be able to activate I would have just ordered the thing instead of standing in line as I"ll be online at the same time anyway.
I am an existing AT&T customer, and switching my plan over (and adding iPhone data) seemed to go without difficulty. And now I wait.
After waiting at the store for 2 hours to get it as they couldn't even sell them because the credit card volume was so much that network was crashing too.
It takes a certain…we'll call it maturity…to accept that nobody is f-ing perfect.
If you plunked down for brand-spanking-new (read:untested) technology, and then want to take it back the next day because there are some delays – well, you deserve to be out $60, IMO.

AT&T knows zero, took them over an hour just to figure out to transfer me to this #. I hope this gets done, trying to get 2 phones hooked up and ported from my T-Mobile gophone. This does suck, cause i can't use the iPhones until they are activated, i wanted to play with them tonight and teach my wife how to use it, but that is not the case, might have to wait for tomorrow. Apple did a great job though at the Apple Stores, went to the 5th ave store in NYC and it took all of 10 minutes to get in and get 2 8Giggers... Waited in line at an AT&T store in queens and they only had 20 units, sold out in an hour, waited in line for 3 hrs, sucked so much. AT&T really looks bad on this one, and their reps, except for Brian, who was the last guy i talked to, were all really bad. Before I called AT&T, I called T-Mobile and they gave me all the info I would need to port to AT&T, been on T-MOB for 5 years, they have great cust. service. Sad to go for Jesus in my hand.
