No iPhone in Puerto Rico, US

Apparently, the iPhone can't be activated if the user lives in Puerto Rico (US). Area code 787 or 939.

Apple had a store in PR ~20 years ago. Right now there are no Apple stores here, although everyone else is here (CompUSA, Sony Store, Modernica ( http://modernicaonline.com/ ), Office Max, Radio Shack, ...).

iPhone not available in this stores, including corporate AT&T stores.

If someone from Puerto Rico is able to use or activate the iPhone let us know. Puerto Rico is included in AT&T's US coverage.

That is because Puerto Rico isn't technically part of the US, but is instead a US territory. Much like half the world, including the US, used to be a British territory. However, it is interesting that it isn't offered in Puerto Rico.

Latest news.

I contacted AT&T online chat support today. They told me I was able to use the iphone, since the coverage includes Puerto Rico.

"Steps to follow" by AT&T tech support.
1. Buy the iphone anywhere in the US (AT&T store or Apple store)
2. Update AT&T billing address (most have a US address). Don't use a PR address.
3. Activate via iTunes with US address
4. Once activated, we can change address again. The address change will be for activation purposes.

Hope this works in the meantime. I will do it by next week if I don't have more info by local AT&T stores.

I have the same issue.

I moved from PR to NY 2 years ago but have kept using my 787 number, and I'm awaiting an iPhone that was bought online yesterday. It's supposed to get here between 2 to 4 weeks, so I'm sure by then someone will have a better say at this.

I did go to the AT&T store near my house a few days before launch and asked them about this, and after they looked at my account they told me everything seemed to be in order and I should be fine. But after looking at the chaos going on with the activations right now, I'm sure us guys with 787 area codes will have some issues about this.

Still, I'll post whatever I hear and find out.

If it doesn't work, I'm gonna have to cancel my account and open up a new one here.

Your biggest issue will be porting a PR area code number and using a mainland US address where the ZIP Code is not going to match the area code of the number you want to port. Especially if you have already ported this number in the past.
I suggest that you read this article and try to use its advice.
