No iPhone in Puerto Rico, US

Apparently, the iPhone can't be activated if the user lives in Puerto Rico (US). Area code 787 or 939.

Apple had a store in PR ~20 years ago. Right now there are no Apple stores here, although everyone else is here (CompUSA, Sony Store, Modernica ( http://modernicaonline.com/ ), Office Max, Radio Shack, ...).

iPhone not available in this stores, including corporate AT&T stores.

If someone from Puerto Rico is able to use or activate the iPhone let us know. Puerto Rico is included in AT&T's US coverage.

If Puerto Rico is part of the United States, we are
American citizens. We go to the war to defend our
democratic ideals and the USA style of life that I
imagine Mr. Steve Jobs loves. We also have AT&T. Why
then can we not buy an iphone? We have the same
spending power as any person who lives in the United
States, Why have we been relegated to third class
citizens?

But you don't pay federal income tax, right? However, the answer to your question is simple: Just stop voting to maintain the Commonwealth status, and vote for admission to the Union.

BTW, I wonder if other "non-states" like Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, D.C., etc., have the same problem as P.R.

And you think federal INCOME taxes are the only taxes people pay? Ever heard of social security tax, medicare tax, excise taxes, etc. etc. etc. Puerto Rico pays THOSE federal taxes to the tune of BILLIONS every year without any voting representation whatsoever. I recall some folks in Boston Harbor had an issue with that a while back and took it out on their tea....

My brother is in Puerto Rico anxiously awaiting the results of this thread...

I live in San Juan and I am using it right now. As a matter of fact, I am typing this message from my iPhone. The phone is the best I have had. My (old phone) Treo 750 is a piece of crap.
What I did, I activated via iTunes using a family member US address. Activation took no more than 4 minutes. Sync was perfect, since I have a MacBook Pro and have been using Mail, iCal, iTunes and Safari.
What I am going to try; change number into a 787. It should work, I am using AT&T's network right now. I am using my iphone with full features with local (Puerto Rico) hardware. I am using "call forward" option from my "old" phone from AT&T to my new iPhone.
