No iPhone in Puerto Rico, US

Apparently, the iPhone can't be activated if the user lives in Puerto Rico (US). Area code 787 or 939.

Apple had a store in PR ~20 years ago. Right now there are no Apple stores here, although everyone else is here (CompUSA, Sony Store, Modernica ( http://modernicaonline.com/ ), Office Max, Radio Shack, ...).

iPhone not available in this stores, including corporate AT&T stores.

If someone from Puerto Rico is able to use or activate the iPhone let us know. Puerto Rico is included in AT&T's US coverage.

No. I have a cell phone. It's registered to my address in Puerto Rico. It's from the AT&T US. I travel to the states all the time. While there, I opened a account with at&t. I currently have a Florida area code (561).
If you want a iPhone in Puerto RIco, the only way to get it is to go to the states and get it. Why not just use both your phones. Forward your current 787 phone number to your new iPhone phone number. It shouldn't cost that much, right?
If you really want it, and you don't want to give up your 787 phone number, that would be the only way.
I know that there's been some talk about hacking or unlocking the iPhone, but as you can see from Apple, that might not be possible. They send updates and scan your iPhone for NONE approved accessories, I'm sure they'll do the same thing with hacking. If you pay money and get it unlocked, who's to say that Apple won't send a file to your phone to lock it back again, or when you sync, it may do the same.
Anyway, spend a little more money and just go and buy it. If you want it, just pay the extra money.

Before I bought my iPhone I asked the customer service of ATT if I could use it in PR. He took a pamphlet with the map saying that I can. When "sync-ing" it told me to call an Apple service phone number. Calling they stated that it CAN'T be used with a PR number (787 or 939). The only options are the ones posted above; either having a US area code or no iPhone at all. She even told me that you can't buy it though apple.com because of that. I hope they can reimburse me the 100% because it was their fault (not telling me this) not mine.

I am waiting for someone else results with the 787 activation. I have speaked with 4 AT&T agents, 2 of them have told me I can't activate with the 787 area code, and 2 of them have told me I can; one of them told me today.

One of my options is to activate through a new number from US address and use it for no more than 30 days, by then, I am almost sure the 787 may be activated and will opt for a service cancellation for that number. I don't want to lose my current number.

"Service Cancellation

You may cancel service within 30 days from the activation date to avoid the early termination fee of $175.

You will be responsible for all applicable usage fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges or other charges through the termination date."

Just found out in a forum.
AT&T has said it in their employee training document. People can move their SIM from their iPhone to another AT&T phone. However, it will not work the other way, and SIMs from other carriers won’t work either.
Bad news! We need either a US new number or wait for 787 area code support.

A friend of mine just got his iPhone today in PR. He couldn't activate it, and even after trying with a US address.

Tomorrow he will try the "Pay as you go" plan, which is "contract free". This is one of those options that appear when there has been an error processing your credit check.

I'll let you guys know how it goes. But yeah, so far its either change your number to a US account, or wait it up.

Here's what I plan to do once I get it.

1) activate it with a GoPhone pick your plan option with a US address and number.
2) forward my current 787 number to my new number.
3) wait patiently for the iPhone's arrival at the island.
4) cancel the GoPhone plan and transfer my current 787 number to the iphone's sim card.
5) be happy..
