iPhone volume is too low

I think I have pretty good hearing, but the iPhones volume seems very low for calls, ringer, email alerts etc..

This is so lame to try and pass off a real serious problem with the plastic answer.

Can you point me to say 10 of the 500 or so - poor volume - posts here in the forums that was resolved by taking off the plastic.

If you forgot to take off the plastic, please inclued yourself in that 10.

I don't mean to sound off to anyone about this, but please do not minimize what are real problems for so many of us as such a simple answer, or maybe I'm just all wrong about the entire issue.

Thanks in advance....

I'm now on my second iPhone. I returned my first one and replaced it with my new one. The volume on the new phone is better than the old one I returned, but not by much. However, it was still worth swapping them out.

When the iPhone is placed up to Max volume, it should be so loud that most people would never use it. However, maxing it out makes it just barely usable.

Part of the problem lies with the ridiculous ringtones they put on it. Items such as "Timba" and "Blues" are barely heard on loud. I'd recommend for the time being to play with the diffrent ringers and not pick the one you like to listen to the best, but instead pick the loudest one. I now have mine set to "Trill" which makes quite a difference.

Apple needs to let its users create their own ringtones and/or download alternatives. My previous ringtone was the Imperial March from Star Wars. I chose it because it was powerful and loud which meant I could leave it on the table upstairs, be outside downstairs and still hear it ring. With the iPhone, I had it sitting on my desk at work and couldn't even hear it ring right in front of me on Max volume!!! Thus, providing the users with different ring tones might make a huge difference as well.

I honestly don't know how they can expect the volume to be sufficient when in the Apple store today, there is no way anyone could have heard an iPhone ring. There were at least 100-200 people in the store and with the talking, there is no way anyone could have heard an iPhone ring unless it was on vibrate or they were holding it right next to their ear. Completely unacceptable. What good is a phone if you can't even hear it ring? It's like having a Ferrari, but no gas to put in it.

As one other piece of info (for those who may be unaware), when listening to your voicemails, if they sound really, really low, try hitting the "Speaker" button on the upper right hand side of that screen. You can hear the VM message faintly without hitting the speaker button, so many might think that they are being played back on the speaker since you can hear something.

All in the all, the iPhone is great. However, the volume issue needs to be addressed and Apple needs to take care of the customers who have already been dealing with this issue.

Cheers.

My ringer volume is too low to be usable. I've heard mention that this might or might not be a software issue.

Has anyone gotten ANY information from Apple as to whether or not this is a software or hardware issue?

Lots of people are running out on the return time we have left.

Anyone with any information, please post.

My ringer volume isn't bad nor is the actual call volume. Unfortunately, I must keep them on maximum to hear good. However, the speaker volume is pathetic. It's so low that I can't use it. I know other people that say the same thing. So exchanging it is not going fix it. I'm concerned that Apple was afraid of lawsuits by people claiming that the volume is too loud. Some of us hear at different audible sounds and we shouldn't have to suffer because others have sensitive hearing.

Another poster like the one's above stated they called Apple care and sent their iphones in for repair and when they got it back it was like night and day. One post said that they fixed the volume in the ear piece and speakerphone. I'm gonna try it and see if it works. Only time the speakerphone is decent is when playing Music, videos I have to turn it to max and phone calls fugettaboutit! Ear piece is terrible I think I have a permanent indentation in the side of my head from trying to hear the other end.

I along with a friend of mine that bought the 8GB model are having volume issues as well as all of the other posters here. I placed a call to Apple and the agent played TOTALLY dumb to the situation, he had not heard of any issues with volume. I had him go to this forum, but after giving him the topic nummber and waiting for a minute or so thinking he was reading the topic, he asked what I was doing and never took down the thread number. Again played dumb, "what forum", "Apple forum"?

Obviously something is going on here that they do not want or care to admit. He did suggest to visit an Apple Store for testing.

It appears as though most all the iPhones are low on the volume side as far as the receiver and spearkerphone are concerned. Note: some people are happy and do not have an issue with the sound. I have had 2 iPhones and now one of the loners from Apple Care service, and this one is too low to hear from also.

I can say that when I am in a very, very quite room I can hear from the iPhone on calls on the receiver, but other than that - I do not think that this phone was developed for the rest of us with normal hearing.

It’s so sad because the rest of the phone kicks! The iphone will never make it in main stream business because of this. I understand that that is not their primary market right now anyway.

But if I am in a store (most any store), or even outside anywhere and I have a call come in to my iPhone, I just don't even bother to answer it. I know I will not be able to hear the other caller.

Now I am waiting on my Apple Bluetooth and the reviews are not coming in very good for that as far as sound quality goes.

Looks like were are going to have to look for a third party solution or just live with the iPhone as it is. Of course I could be wrong and Apple might release an update that fixes this.

iHated to do it but I called apple support and am sending my iPhone in to crank up the volume on this baby. ***** that I have to delete and resynch everything but it will be worth it if on max volume settings my neighbors will be able to hear my phone conversation.

What is bothering me is this though, when I use the iPod on the phone it's speaker volume is awesome but could be louder. Watching Terminator 2 today and speaker volume is horrible until it gets to the part where Arnold starts blowing stuff up. Normal conversation in the movie is bad on speakerphone. Phone calls in speaker phone and ear piece is fine when I'm alone in a quiet room but when in a car with no music and just Air condition on I can't hear a thing!

I'll post results of when Apple fixes the sound on my phone and returns it. If Apple doesn't fix the volume issue I think every customer should be given a free t-shirt and iPhone bluetooth ear piece! Well it's a good thought anyways.

Although I liked the Apple support representative and him being polite and helpful, I was really surprised that he said "Volume problem? this is the first time I've heard a complaint about the volume on the iPhone" I just said, "ok well then then it shouldn't take long for Apple to fix the volume since my iPhone is only one with a volume problem"

Took mine back and got a new one as a replacement but the volume is still too low. Guess I will send it back. And no, I did not have the plastic cover on! And yes, the apple support tech on the phone told me the same thing- it is the first he had heard of a volume issue- nonsense.

If people really want to change this situation, they should go to the Apple Feedback site and let them know.

Remember back in June, Apple revealed that 200 testers had been trying out the phone for a couple of months... and their number one complaint was low volume.

So Apple engineers fixed it, they said.

If you think your volume is bad now, imagine what it was like six months ago.

As a side note, my neighbor complained about the echo in her phone. Eventually her son figured out the plastic (!!) was still on, and once it came off everything sounded great. Go figure.
