Response to Becky76,
When I wrote my lengthy description about iPhone cases, I tried to detail what my preferences were and the rationale for what I personally wanted in a case. I was aware others might have different criteria and may not be interested in my preferences. I read many reviews prior to selecting the Sena with statements like, the person’s new case was “perfect except the iPhone slipped out.” I crossed that one off my choices.
Having used the Sena Dockable case for nearly a month now, I still think it is the best case for my needs. I didn’t consider how far the clip made the case protrude from my waist. But I don’t usually wear my shirt out when I wear the iPhone.
I considered the InCase. It appeared to be a good looking and well constructed case. But it did not meet my criteria of having full access to the controls, including the dock slot.
Before getting the Sena case, I used the Apple case I had for my iPod clickwheel (with a belt clip). The iPod case was the same size across as the iPhone, but not as thick. But pushing the folded iPhone cleaning cloth in the case against the iPhone screen held it pretty snugly. The most serious drawback to that, as well as any case actually made for the iPhone which required removing the iPhone from the case to use it, was that removing the iPhone was the most likely time to drop it. That made any case intended to protect it from unexpected drops promote exactly the opposite. The iPhone is slim and sleek which made it seem like it would easily slip out of my grasp. Every time I removed the iPhone from my makeshift case to change iTunes, make a call, check the weather or stocks and all the other ways I use my iPhone, I felt my rather expensive investment was in peril.
I also read reviews from people who said some cases were tight and difficult to get the phone out, sometimes shooting the iPhone across the room like a champagne cork. The InCase doesn’t look extremely snug, but it needs to be removed from the case to use it. I decided on a case that always stayed in the protective cover. I haven’t removed my iPhone from the Sena case since I got it.
You are correct, the Sena website does not show the clip, nor does it give the dimensions. The length is 2.5 inches (6 cm) and the width is 1 inch (about 2.5 cm) which is the same as my iPod case. The thickness of the Sena clip is much greater than the iPod case though, maybe because of the swivel on the iPhone case and no swivel on the iPod case. The distance from the back of the case to where it attaches to the waistband is 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) for the Sena clip and about 1/8th inch (2mm) for the iPod case. The part of the clip that goes inside the waistband is 0.25 inches (0.5 cm) compared with the 1/8th inch size for the iPod clip.
So to answer your question, the Sena clip will make your iPhone protrude much more than an Apple iPod case. I don’t know how much the InCase clip sticks out because they don’t give dimensions either. Sorry I was so verbose in my reply, but I wanted provide as much information about cases as I could. It seems there are quite a few people looking for the ideal case. I know how much research I did trying to get more information about a case to fit my needs. I hope this helps you and perhaps others.
Also, like you, it was a difficult choice for me between the solid color case and the two-toned one. I like the functionality of the case so much, I am going to buy another in the red/black. Like the iPhone, the case distinguishes itself from all others. I wish I could use Steve Jobs $100 credit to buy it at the Apple Store.
