Bought iPhone--Sealed In Box--Thinking About Returning It.

I was one of the few able to walk into my local ATT store and buy an iPhone on June 29. Got the 8GB model. I didn't open the box and activate it because my Apple computer is in the shop for a memory upgrade. Really, with all or most negative things in this discussion threads and on the web that I have been reading about the iPhone--I'm thinking of taking it back for a refund. My buddy has four iPhones and things have been good for him. I've used his phone and it is an awsome phone. But, for $600, look at what people have been posting--low volume, email sync problems, batteries not lasting or getting too hot--or have to be replaced for $79 by Apple because they're soldered in? I think I made a mistake here. Somebody convince me otherwise because I have cold feet. Any comments are welcomed. zoz

Super Job Leone!!! I too love my new iPhone for all of your reasons stated above. I haven't even been able to use the WiFi cause it is broke...SO WHAT...Apple is sending me a loaner while they fix it and waived the 29.00 fee. Everything else is perfect and works like a charm. For those of you that are unhappy...CARRY YOUR LAPTOP and use VOIP!!! Nothing in life is perfect but this is pretty dang close!

Seriously, been sitting on the fence about getting the iPhone because (1) switching the whole family from Verizon to AT&T, (2) first generation item. Been reading all the posts here and other forums and although still undecided, your post makes sooo much sense. Thanks!

I hate to tell you but expecting positive reviews in a support forum is pretty much a hopeless task. THis applies to any product. One thing you have to remember is that for any product, there are some people that are going to hate it. Thats a fact of life. That should not stop you.

Second: THink of support forums as a hospital during a crisis and you as an outsider trying to determine the state of health for a town. Your views are going to be heavily skewed toward the negative. Do not let that stop you. THis board represents a very small percentage of iPhone owners.

I can't tell you what to do with your purchase. I don't own one cause I can't afford it. The choice is up to you.

It's been said, but it's worth saying again. People don't come to support forums to praise a product, they typically come to air their problems in hopes of resolution. Ever hear of the "vocal minority?" That's exactly what it is. 🙂

If you're not sure, return it. If you decide you want it you can always buy it again. Personally speaking I have had almost no issues with my phone. There are things that need to be worked on, but for a v1.0 phone it's pretty impressive. The ONLY feature I'm sad wasn't included was instant messaging. Everything else is wonderful.

There's not much else to say, people have already covered it really. I've had great experiences with my iPhone so far and don't regret the cash spent yet.

Randy,

Make a checklist of all the functions you want or need on a phone and compare it to what the iPhone currently offers. If any functions that are critical to you are missing, then return it.

Personally, I have three or four items that I really want Apple to implement, but they're not sufficient to make me return the iPhone. I also expect Apple to address them with software/firmware updates in the coming months.

Some of the problems people have been reporting are probably due to defects. From what I've read, Apple is exchanging or repairing those.

In some ways, the iPhone reminds me of the Mac that I bought in 1984. It was imperfect, but it was also a lot more fun to use than any computer that I'd owned before.

Based on the reactions I've been getting this past week from my friends, family and even strangers standing in line at Subway, most reacted with "I gotta have one!". When I saw the ads from Apple weeks before its release, I was amazed what it can do! And based on those features alone, I knew right then that I will be buying it on launch day!

So, Randy, if you've seen those ads, wouldn't you want one too????
Of course, not one product is perfect. There are issues that need to be ironed out but thank goodness we have the option that other smartphones do not... We have the ability to update! And flick our fingers!!

The choice is ultimately yours. But as for me? I made that choice since its first announcement in January...

I am very choosy in what I buy and now I have 2 iPhones in my family. I love it. Without too much speculating, I'm sure Apple will increase it's functionability soon and make it even better by updates. There is nothing that I miss from the Razor, Nokia, Sony or the Blackberry that I gave away.

Awesome post. The OP should open that baby up and embrace it with his own opinions and not that of others. After my 3 days using my iPhone, my only complaint was having to go into a second menu for the period, but i found you can do that via one touch.

Press and hold the punctuation button on keyboard then slide finger to . or , then relese. you get your period and then the letter keyboard.

This baby is going to get some upgrades from Apple as its all software driven. I don't think V2+ is going to be any more than HW improvements and more memory.

I got my iPhone on June 29th at the local Apple store and I generally love it. My only issue so far is not being able to use my linksys wireless connection at home. The iPhone sees it, but it will not let me "join" the network no matter how many settings I enter correctly.

Other than that, I would keep it. It is not perfect, but it's pretty darn cool!

Keep the phone. With over 1 million phone sold there are bound to be a few problems. As far as the complaints here at the forums---80% of them is the user and not the phone. I bought 2 phones and the only problem I had was with the usb cord. Easily solved...I use an ipod cord. Activation takes only minutes.

This phone is by far the best I have ever used. I'm sure most of the upgrades will be software. Version 2 will have more memory and probably be less expensive. And it will be 3G and work on all the networks. For now keep the phone.

Which model Linksys are you using?

What type of security are you using on your Linksys?

I didn't realize that they left off features that they didn't announce ahead of time.

Don't count on any software updates or additional features until the are announced or released by Apple.

that's a tough one. If youre not a AT&T customer, then I would suggest returning. But, it sounds like you are, so keep it. The phone is fantastic, and you should have little problem. Besides, the people who say the volume is low probably like it loud. You're in the clear. Enjoy it!
