cd/dvd drive keeps ejecting cd/dvd!!!

Same deal with Leopard CD. I kept inserting it over and over. Finally got it to mount, then on reboot, it wouldn't mount to install. Went through the process again, and it mounted both times. Now I have Leopard installed. But it took around 2hrs total from the time I unwrapped the disk until it finished installing.

I read through all the messages on this discussion. I have exactly the same problem. In my case, it started from CD. DVD was kind of OK but doesn't read Leopard DVD I think Apple should recall MacBook, wouldn't you all think so?

I just bought a used Macbook with a warranty/applecare and the drive has yet to work. It has spit out every disc I put in. I've contacted the company I purchased it from and was told to take it in for warranty work, so now I will again be computerless 😟 I think if everyone is having this big of trouble with the drive then apple should put out a recall.

I have having the same problem but with an interesting twist....

Every since I put Leopard in, My Macbook ejects discs as soon as I put them in. I have tried Apple disks as well as original and new music CD's. They go in, there's some whirring and they get spat out within 5 seconds.

*What's interesting however is that when I boot up in Windows, the disks are accepted no problem whatsoever and, for example, the music plays.*

I ran the Windows side as a test. After returning from WIndows to Leopard, the problem persists, i.e. the disks get spat out.

I had the same problem, and rang Applecare as I was still under new computer warranty...

It seems that Leopard or an update has caused some problems, restarting the Mac into Safe mode and the restarting back into normal mode fixes the problem.

You restart into safe mode by holding down shift.

My problem also started following the Leopard install. My drive was constantly trying to eject a disc from an empty drive. Every 20-30 seconds, eject...eject...eject.

Tried the safe mode but didn't solve my problem. Even if I launch from Wimdows XP, just the drive does not accept any disc. I guess my case is very serious unfortunately. I have been using Mac since IISi, long long time but this is the first serious problem.....

Right, I must admit after then applying another update I had the same problem again...

I then downloaded 'Yasu' (but any application that performs maintenance tasks will do) and ran all the functions, which then seemed to fix the problem again.

It seems that the updates are causing some sort of problem in the disk mount points, so it's a lower level UNIX type permissions problem...

But if doing what I suggested helps you then don't worry too much about why!

Lets hope Apple fix this in the long term though...

This is just horrible!
I got an Matshita UJ-857 and it won't accept any movie-DVDs and won't burn ANY DVDs anymore. I called Apple Support today and they wouldn't help me because I'm out of warranty for 41 days. Then I went to the local ASP and the employee there told me, that to replace the Superdrive would cost me 450EUR. I don't even have a chance to replace it myself, because it's not possible to buy any Superdrives anywhere (except used ones at ebay, which are at ebay, because they, guess what, don't read any DVDs).
So, all I can do now, is buy an external drive, because Apple used cheap Matshita Drives in their MacBooks... I really am very disappointed... I loved Apple and my MacBook and now I can't even watch a movie on it anymore.

Same thing - the drive won't read the Leopard install disk (family edition) but my son's Macbook read it just fine. Will read some entertaintment DVDs and not others. It was fine until a recent update (I installed iLife 08 from it).

Hello everyone, one again I'm having this issue I did have it working for a time but now I fell the issue between either the software or hardware or even both. I will be calling AppleCare again tomorrow to get this resolved !

I'm using 1st gen. Macbook.

My using environment is:
early Macbook (1.83Ghz)
Mac OS X 10.4.10,
iTunes 7.5 + Quicktime 7.3,
MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221 (firmware: GA0H).

After upgraded to iTunes 7.5 + Quicktime 7.3, I've ejected cds.

My symptom is that:
commercial audio/program cds are not loaded. They are ejected and not appeared in the Finder also,
but burnt audio/program cds are loaded and dvds are also doing well.

I'm trying to:
pram/smc reset,
safe mode boot,
disk utility test/hardware test after booting with OS X install dvd dics 1,
administrator account login,
creating another account, and login.

But they don't work at all. After doing those things, I called to local apple service center in South Korea in the morning.

The final solution suggested by the service center is "re-installing OS X", because the application incompatibility is suspected. I'm not re-install OS X. And I don't want to do so.

If you have solved the problem, please let me know.

I am having the same problem. It began doing it only ever few dozen CDs/DVDs but now it won't load ANY discs. I'm very ******, this is a $1300 computer, i bought a Mac because i didn't trust a PC for while i'm in college and look what happens. What i don't understand is if this is such a persistant problem and so many people have it, why hasn't Apple done anything? Where's that excellent customer service and quality i heard about when i was promoting Windows? I'm embarrassed to tell people my drive doesn't work cause i know they'll make fun of me. Is there no fix out there? I guess i'll have to check my warranty and go to the nearest Apple store (2 hours away) to get this resolved.

I've read all the recent threads on this subject. Seems to me a recall or free fixes/upgrades should be in order for all customers with this problem.

Hahahahah oh wow. I just decided to try the last disc that i can remember working in my Mac, and it worked. So i thought, hey maybe it's fixed, so i put in another disc, spit it out at me. So i put the other one back in and it worked again. This is so messed up. Well, at least i know i can watch "The Lost Boys" over and over again in my Mac.

Ya, I called AppleCare and complained about all the issues I have had before this including having the plastic replaced on the palm rest area, having the AC adapter switched for a different one, the having the Hard Drive die and replaced. The last last time I talked to AppleCare was in August I thought I have solved the issue but not case I came back last week. I did talk my way up to a manager and he said it would cost $380 to replace my drive, and would not bend the rules for me at all (I did not buy the extended warranty, ever had any issues with my other systems). I'm extremely mad for paying about $1200 to having it fall apart on me in such a short time, my iBook G3 has out lasted this stupid thing.

So I'm moving on and will not be buying any more Apple notebook systems until they start having better quality, and today I usher something new and different, I moved on to my nice new HP Table PC the tx1308nr. I will still use Mac systems such as my iMac G5 that I'm typing on right now, but will quit recommending MacBook's and MacBook Pros's to friends and family for now.
