I had this exact problem. I bought some air duster by Ixos put the long nozzle on the can and gave it a good spray into the cd drive and this resolved the problem. Now I can play my cd's on my mac book and use i tunes. I don't believe this has worked but it did.

I am having the same trouble. It does not happen with all CD/DVD's just some.

I have some Textbook CD's that aren't being read and get spit out. Today I installed iLife and it read that fine, however, when I attempt to put in the iWork 08 DVD/CD that one gets spit out.

I tried the trouble shooting page you mentioned above, but no help. I think its time to call Applecare.

Like I said I was having problems with the drive called AppleCare they told me to do some things I already done they included...
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Holding down the Command(Apple), Option, P, and R and then hold the Power button simultaneously, and told me to do that 3 times and wait for 3 loud buzzing (or some odd sound I can't describe).
Also Resetting System Management Controller (SMC)
Was told to shutdown and disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery after that I had to press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds(I did 10 seconds) and then release the button, then reconnect the battery and AC Adapter and to restart the system.
I was asked to try the drive again and it did not work when I was talking on the phone with the person, they said they could not do any thing becasue I was out of warranty but I asked to talk to a manager or someone higher about all my problems with the MacBook and see if I could get a new unit and he said yes and put me on wait but when I was on wait I tried out the drive again and it worked again.

I do not know if it good again for the long run or it fail and just because of that! This is one of my least trusted Apple systems, for having the plastic replaced, having a hard drive go dead, and having the AC adapter switched out for a different one, and now this drive. This is one odd Apple system!

Yes I'm having the same issue will not read any of my CD's or DVD's, the night before I was burning a CD got an error that it could not continue than my program Toast Titanium that I was using froze after the error, had to force quit. Looked under Disk Utility to see if it could see the somewhat formated CD was there but was not and froze that program than had to force quit that too. So after all that I did a forced Restart of my MacBook, and I thought I would try a DVD movie, no luck.

So know I'm wondering if it's a defective drive that came with the original revision one MacBook system?

Well how about all of you find out what model you have for your CD-RW/DVD by looking for it under Apple Menu, About This Mac, More Info..., Hardware...., ATA, ATA Bus, (THEN YOUR MODEL SHOULD BE LISTED.)

My Model is
MATSHITACD-RW CW-8221
Revision: GA0H

Macbook is not reading anything but DVD movies. I tried the suggestions you listed, but to no avail. Phoned Apple just now and she said to take it in and have it looked at. She didn't even mention the measures you took (PRAM, SMC), but I told her I tried those and it didn't change anything. Perhaps they now know that the only way to deal with this is to take it in....

I find this ridiculous. This Macbook was purchased 7 weeks ago. I stumbled onto this issue because I was trying to install a printer onto the computer for my daughter, who is leaving for university tomorrow and obviously needs to take her computer with her. We just got two Macbooks 7 weeks ago, and I must say this leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

i found that by pressing down just to the right of the enter and right shift keys you have a greater chance of getting the disc read. i just noticed the problem today right after i burned boot camp 1.4. it burned correctly and everything but when i tried to install the drivers on xp, it just kept spitting out. press hard down and it does work... sometimes.. lol

I'm having the same problems with my CD/DVD drive in my MacBook. The drive model is MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857, Revision HBEA. I tried resetting PRAM and SMC as reported by another poster. Didn't do anything to solve this problem.

Symptoms are that I insert a CD (music) or DVD (movie). The drive accepts the disc and attempts to read it. I hear sounds of the drive trying to spin up three times. Finally, the drive ejects the disc without mounting it.

I suspect it's time to call Apple Care. 😟
