checkered pattern on screen

Is anyone here noticing a checkered pattern of white dots? (Go into a dark place and turn the brightness on full then look at a black screen you should see it if you have this problem) does anyone think this a problem possibly in the future or can this just be fixed with a software update?
PS: I've seen some phones with this problem and some without.

macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Thanks the info.

To all ID-7 iphone users,
I did the "field test" (dial 3001#12345#) on my screen with LCD ID 7xxxxx and Full brightness. I have do not see checker patherns. I guess not all ID 7 have the same problem after all. However if you see the checker patherns, apple will exchange with an AppleCare.

comparison: ID 7 is on the (L) and 5 is on the (r)

The difference is NOT microscopic....The 5 series is on the right and harder to read web text, etc.

Compare your conclusion to a post at the beginning of this thread:

If it starts with a 7xxxxxx number it is one of the 'defective' ones while the ones with a 5xxxxxx number are one of the 'non-defective' ones. Supposedly the "5" model doesnt have the grid pattern, is sharper and a bit brighter

You think the 7 series is better than the 5 series, this other guy thinks the 5 series is better than the 7 series.

Before claiming that one number is defective and one is the "good one," you would think the difference should be big enough to agree on which is which!

If your screen is defective, get it repaired or replaced. But if you type in a bunch of numbers and get a 5 or a 7, that by itself doesn't mean squat.

I noticed my checker screen from the start....never thought anything of it until I got my girl an iPhone a few days ago and noticed hers didnt have it. So, I ran the test and sure enough i got a 7 *** panel id and she has a 5 *** panel id...Apple better do something, we paid for the same product and mines friggin inferior...

Post Count 1 + complaint = astroturfer.

I have the checkered screen problem and mailed it in to apple. They sent the phone back saying that they "couldn't reproduce the problem." I am very unhappy that they are refusing to admit this problem exists. I have compared multiple iphones and this isn't present on all of them. I guess I'll just have to wait until enough people complain (like for the ipod touch screen issue) for apple to finally fess up. It ***** that apple employs a "wait until it might affect sales" strategy for defects. I was thinking about buying a macbook, but this has made me have second thoughts.

I called Apple about this issue a month ago. You can send it in snd get a free one. Also, they dont reccomend field test mode as it can brick your phone. My fiance has a 5XXXXX # I have a 7XXXX and there is a diffrence. But, its really nothing too serious in my opnion. You have a 1 year warranty from date of purchase. So, im waiting too see if a software update can fix this issue b4 i go w/o my jesus phone.

I seriously doubt that running a "field test" would brick your phone seeing as it is just a way to view info about the phone. I actually did send my phone in, and even included a nice note stating that I have had numerous screen problems and I would appreciate a screen free from defects.

I know they opened the phone up for some reason, but they didn't acknowledge the dot problem. After looking at more phones I am convinced that the screen on mine not only has the dots, but is also inferior to some when it comes to color contrast. Also, the breakdown increased the light bleeding on the right side, ugh!

I guess I'm going to wait a bit until hopefully all the bad replacement phones are given out to those who don't know the difference before I seek another replacement. I understand that apple has to approach quality issues strategically. But, frankly, it would seem to make more sense to go ahead and attempt to appease those who have an understanding of this quality issue.
