Failure to calibrate laser power level?

I am having some difficulty burning music cds. The "failed to calibrate the laser power level" message comes up after checking media, preparing titles, and ejects disc. I have tried both Memorex Music discs and TDK Music discs. I have used both brands succesfully in the past, many times.

I got the same message when I've tried to archive photos from iPhoto using imation cd-rw discs.

Is there another test I can run on my burner (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E)? I did run TechTool with no reported errors. Or is this one for the Apple shop?

I have low-budget coaster DVD-R's and had the infamous message. No can air in sight but was able to burn it at 2x. Thanks for the tips.

Had this same problem when trying to burn onto Dual Layer DVD. Read forum. Tried the Language change fix without success. Inserted DVD in slot just a tiny bit to open the slot up and blew in for a bit. That seemed to do the trick is burning away right now.

I had this problem on my 24" iMac and after talking with apple support we were able to solve with the following:

1. shut down computer completely.
2. unplug everything.
3. wait a minute (60 seconds, not 5).
4. plug everything back in but DO NOT TURN COMPUTER ON.
5. immediately after you turn your computer on, hold down the following 4 keys simultaneously <COMMAND> <OPTION> P R. my screen turned white, then black and rebooted again. after the second reboot, release the keys.
6. try burning again.

I had exact same problem. Language setting, low speed burn or resetting didn't work. A simple trick did, just logged out and logged in back again. And viola it started to burn my DVD. Go figure.

Add me to the problem with the solution being the compressed air shot into the MacBook Pro slot for 5 to 10 seconds. Moved it across the slot and I am burning a DVD now through the Finder!
