Booting with new aluminium keyboard

Hi,
I got the new aluminium keyboard yesterday - seems to be fine but:

While booting there were no keys recognized at all. Neither CMD-V for verbous booting messages nor ALT for selecting either MacOS or BootCamp/Windoze...

Is there still a firmware update pending?

I'm using a Intel MacMini with MacOS 10.4.10, the latest keyboard update and all other published patches and updates...

Any hints?

MacMini, CoreDuo 1.8 GHz, Mac OS X (10.4.10), aluminium keyboard (with cable)

I tried it myself, though I think it can also select and eject CDs. This is quoted from Wikipedia:

"Holding down the Menu button on the remote while starting up an Intel Macintosh enters the System Picker (Same as holding the Option/Alt key at startup). The remote can then be used to cycle through all bootable partitions and can then confirm them by pressing the Play/Pause button. This can be especially useful for Boot Camp users who might frequently use this feature to boot into Windows partitions on the Intel Macs. The remote can also eject CDs or DVDs in this menu by selecting the disc and then pressing the + (Volume Up) button on the remote. [8]"

If I were you, no. It's a great keyboard, I love how it looks and feels. If you're not planning on dual booting with Windows then you'll have no problems. If you are going to dual boot, you can just use your remote to choose the OS until Apple fixes the problem. So in my opinion it's worth it, this keyboard is too nice to give up simply because there's that one bug with it.

Now what? Should I cancel that order first thing in the morning?

No. I'm quite happy with the new keyboard and I for sure will never go back. Especially since I know the 'remote'-workaround there's no reason any more to use another keyboard. To be honest: As an Ex-FreeBSD user I like the verbouse boot messages a lot (triggered with CMD-V during boot) but that's no reason to use a worse keyboard than I have now - 99.9% I use the keyboard under MacOS and there it works perfectly for me.

cheers!
i'm new to using macs (4 month by now), cause of logic, and I'm impressed. it really works fine and i got used to the gui very fast.
but recently I replaced my logitech wireless-kit with a mighty mouse and the aluminium keyboard and boot-options are no longer available.
in this thread i read, that somehow there's something wrong with the bootloader and i've got to update the efi, unfortunatly doug's link doesn't lead to a solution anymore.
will updating the efi solve my problem?
where can i find the update?
can anybody help a new mac user?

Make sure you have Keyboard Update 1.2 (Wired) or 1.1 (Wireless) found here:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/keyboardsoftwareupdate12.html
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/wirelesskeyboardmousefirmwareupdate.html

You can update your Intel Mac with these EFI update. Make sure to have all applications closed before clicking the "shutdown" button in the update. Then upon start up, hold the power button till you see a status bar or hear a number of chimes.

Hopefully these will help.

I use the Spanish version, iMac early 2006 and it also happens to me.
I've got a problem with my DVD drive when writing, so I called AppleCare today. The guy told me to boot Apple Hardware Test and the guy got upset with me because he said I was not pressing D long enough and it was my fault.
Finally, he asked me what keyboard I had and then he said that there was some problem with my keyboard and mi iMac.

He asked me to get an old keyboard again if I wanted to use diagnostic tools!!!

Mmmmhh.... I think they've done a bad work, how is it that they are needing more than 1,5 months to solve this issue???

Hello,

just wanted to add my piece. I have same boot up problem with the new aluminium wired keyboard and mac mini. No boot up options work whatsoever!! Using remote as a work around for boot camp but this is very disappointing this seems to be a fairly widespread problem and still no solution from apple. Does any one have a solution to this problem yet? Does apple normally solve problems like this or does it consider them not important enough? Seems strange that the mac mini seems to be there to encourage 'switchers' yet, as soon as you use actual apple products with it ( the new keyboard) there are faults!
