safari downloads all files as "securedownload" changing the original name

Hi all,

Each time I download a file that comes as attachment through email, Safari downloads it as "securedownload" with no extension and with an icon that looks like a blank page. It is changing the original name of the file and lossing its extension. This is causing me huge problems because all documents end up in my computer as the same. Then I have to rename them in order to open them. This is only done by Safari (since three days ago). When I download the same files with Firefox, I get them fine.

Does someone know what to do about this? Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Same thing is happening to me - just as of today. I don't remember having changed any settings that would provoke such a change and I haven't been able to figure it out in Safari preferences. Did you ever find a solution?

Violeta and Saritajune, I'm trying to figure this problem out but I can't seem to replicate it on my Mac. (Running Mac OS X 10.4.10 with all OS and security updates and the latest Safari 3 beta.)

Do you have any Safari enhancer programs installed? I don't think this is likely to be the problem but I'm trying to rule it out as a cause.

What version of Safari are you using? You can check in the Safari menu, "About Safari."

Hi Saritajune and Rachel:

Thanks for replying. As far as I know, I don´t have any Safari enhancer installed. The thing is it was working fine, and for no reason, Safari began to download the documents as "secure download". At that time I had Safari 2 point something. I thought the problem would dissapear if I downloaded the latest version, which I did and is the one that I have now, 3.0.3, but the problem is still there.

Thanks for trying to solve this puzzle. Let me know if you find a solution.

Hi Rachel,

I'm having the same problem with all of my downloaded files being renamed "securedownload." I have the same OS (10.4.10) and version of Safari (3 beta) as you, with all security updates. I think the problem arises when you download files from Yahoo e-mail using Safari. I don't have the problem with other browsers or e-mail accounts. From various internet discussions about this problem that I've read, it seems that it started happening to people around August 23/24 (strange).

Anyway, I hope this additional information helps, and thanks so much for trying to find a solution to this frustrating problem!

I tried sending myself an attachment (a PDF file, since someone in one of these threads mentioned a PDF being one of the problems in this situation) to my Yahoo account. I accessed my Yahoo account through Safari. The attachment downloaded as a regular PDF file. I'm not sure what to think. Do you know what kind of attachments are affected? I'm willing to try more tests.

Hi,

So the file wasn't renamed as "securedownload.pdf"? Interesting.

All of the attachments I have tried downloading from my Yahoo account are affected (.jpeg, .tiff, .doc, .pdf, etc.). The documents open just fine, although with the Word documents, I have to tell it which application to use.

I haven't changed any preferences in Safari or Yahoo recently, so I'm stumped as to what the problem could be. Yesterday I even tried downloading Safari again, but it didn't fix the problem. I'm sorry you haven't been able to reproduce it.

Amusingly enough, yesterday it did not. It downloaded with its correct name. (I'm looking at that downloaded file, still on my desktop, today. So I'm absolutely certain this is the case.) Today I re-downloaded the same attachment from the same email in my Yahoo account and today it downloaded as "securedownload.pdf."

Go figure.

More testing is obviously in order. One thing I can definitely say: this problem is not consistent. It's only in Yahoo, but doesn't seem to affect everyone, and exists for two of three Yahoo accounts for one of the people posting here. It occurs in Safari 2 and 3 and not other web browsers.

Haven't seen this yet on any of my Yahoo accounts. However, given Yahoo's lack of commitment toward Safari browser compatibility and functional usage, nothing surprises me when oddities occur with Yahoo Mail, Video, or Chat.

Yahoo Beta Mail is soon to be released in its Final form. While compatible with Firefox, Safari incompatibility with this new version continues to be a "pink elephant in the room".

A few days ago I noticed some pictures sent to me were named "securedownlod" but they all downloaded and opened just fine with their .jpg extenstion.. today I received three word documents from the bank all named 'securedownlod" with no word extension, all appearing blank.. I cliked, downloaded and opened all three, after that I started having the same problem as the rest of you... ANY file with ANY extension in Safari from my YAHOO mail accounts downloads as "securedownload" and it won't open... Camino and Firefox can open the same files...
IS IT A NEW VIRUS? maybe all of our macs have been hacked....

Any solutions yet???
