safari downloads all files as "securedownload" changing the original name

Hi all,

Each time I download a file that comes as attachment through email, Safari downloads it as "securedownload" with no extension and with an icon that looks like a blank page. It is changing the original name of the file and lossing its extension. This is causing me huge problems because all documents end up in my computer as the same. Then I have to rename them in order to open them. This is only done by Safari (since three days ago). When I download the same files with Firefox, I get them fine.

Does someone know what to do about this? Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Hi Rachel and all:

Thanks so much for trying to figure out what is going on with this issue. As you said, the only thing clear is that this is a Safari-Yahoo Mail problem. Now that I think about it, I have switched to Yahoo Beta months ago, and from time to time, when I open my email with Safari, Yahoo tells me that Yahoo Beta doesn´t support my browser, but still opens my email, of course without every fixture that Yahoo Beta has. Yet, I keep using Safari, don´t know why I´m so attached to it!! In the meantime, I am copy-pasting the name of the file to the freaking "securedownload" one on my desktop. But this is so annoying! (Sure, sometimes I have to open Firefox, when I have several docs to download).

Probably we should ask Yahoo about this problem.

Thanks a lot to all of you.

I was thrilled to find this discussion as I am also having this problem. I have some more information that may or may not help. I have always been able to open pictures sent through attachments on my Safari, but now it downloads with the identity of "securedownload". When I open it, there is no picture. If I click on the download, it opens to a page called color sync utility and asks me to verify or repair profiles. This "color sync utility" was downloaded as an update April 7th of 2007 according to my computer. I have automatic updates, so I just always allow it to update. I do remember that one just popping up in a very strange way that made me question if it was actually a real update. Did that happen to anyone else? It was within the last week or so.

I am using Safari and Yahoo mail and am having the same issue. Downloads rename themselves as "securedownload." This doens't happen if I forward the email to "another" email account and download it. This MUST be a yahoo thing. Honestly, Yahoo is behind the times when dealing with mac users. They say, in one of there kbase files that the "autocomplete functions" does work with Apple Safari, but when questioned, they send a response that this is in error (but never fixes the kbase). Also, the ability to use bullets, numbers, etc doesn't work with Safari (which seems to be there choice).

When it asks if I want to use it for my default browser, do I say yes? What will be the effect from this?

If you say yes, when you click on a link in an email program, or from any other external source (e.g. a PDF file or a Word document), it will be opened by Firefox.

You can still use any web browser you want, any time you want, no matter which is your default browser.

You can change your default browser yourself in the future if you change your mind, so there's no great risk in this. But for now, just decide what web browser you want to open links from other programs and choose that browser as your default.

If you choose Firefox as you default browser and then want to change back to Safari as the default, do this: Launch Safari, go to Safari > Preferences, click on the General tab, and where it says Default Web Browser, choose Safari in the drop-down menu. As you can see there, you can also choose a different web browser as your default in that preferences setting.
