itunes + iPod classic freezes

When I connect my 80Gig iPod classic to my windows XP machine and play music through the PC's speakers using itunes, every time a song reaches 9 seconds iTunes freezes for 26 seconds - the music still plays but the iTunes window is frozen with no responses to mouse clicks. After the 26 seconds all the mouse clicks happen quickly as if they were queued up and the ellapsed song time skips to 35seconds and then continues on normally. During this 26 second freeze iTunes takes up 50% of the CPU in the Windows task manager Process screen. (The 50% is actually 100% of one of the 2 cores of the dual core CPU)

The freeze also happens sometimes randomly later in songs.

Plugging in the iPod takes about 1min for itunes to start up and it takes about 2 minutes to eject the iPod which seems long, my nano is significantly quicker at this, and exibits no iTunes freezes. This freezing happens on 2 different PC's that I've tried. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I'm using itunes 7.4.1.2

hp, Windows XP

Glad to know that I am not alone. I am on my second 160gb iPod Classic. The first one froze solid while syncing my library on the initial sync with my iMac. I never could unfreeze the iPod and took it back to the Apple Store. They replaced it, I came home, synced and it also froze solid. The screen on the iPod has the illuminated Apple on it and is completely unresponsive to anything I try. My iMac can not see the iPod... it is a paper weight. Pressing Menu/Select doesn't even work.

All software/firmware is current.

My iPod Mini, iPod Video 60gb and iPhone all sync perfectly.

Seriously... what's going on?

Firmware did not fix my problem.

I never had a problem with my 160GB Classic being sluggish or the actual unit itself freezing. I have about 14,000 songs on mine and most have cover art. My only problem is that when I have it connected to Itunes and I am manually adding tracks to it that it freezes up. All of Itunes freezes for about 45-50 seconds. The screen on the Ipod will change from the Sync screen to the connected screen. If I am adding one CD this happens on the 9th or 10th track. If I drag more tracks over to the Ipod it freezes again about 10 seconds after you drop the tracks on the Ipod. The amount of time that Itunes stays frozen has increased with the amount of music that is on my Ipod. The new firmware update 1.0.1 did not fix this.

I returned to the Apple Store today with frozen iPod number two. After many futile attempts to unlock the iPod the Genius Bar staff finally waved the white flag. I accepted a store credit for the full amount and went on my way with no new iPod.

If enough people experience this Apple will be forced to address and once a fix is made I will again attempt to purchase the 160GB iPod Classic. Until then I will go back to old faithful, my 60GB iPod Video. She will not hold my entire library but she works without any flaws!

i bought the 80gig ipod classic last tuesday (upgrading from my "old-trusty" 20gig black and white) and immediately noticed that itunes "hangs" in windows XP. it took me approximately 6 hours to upload 31 gigs of music. at home i have a macbook pro, so i tried uploading music via my mac and experienced the EXACT same delays.

i went into the apple store on saturday and they exchanged my ipod citing it as "faulty." obviously lots and lots of people are having this same problem.

heres my setup:
80gig ipod classic
formatted PC
windows XP
(also macbook pro running 10.4.1)
firmware 1.1

i have a PC at work, so i have to format PC so i can use it on both computers. looks like apple NEEDS to get on this fast. hooking my ipod up seriously hoses my computer.

We've been having the same problem with our new 80G iPod Classic. The problem appears to be with the iPodService process using all of the CPU when the Classic is connected. I have confirmed this by looking at Windows Task Manager, under Performance. With iTunes running, CPU is normal. Connect the Classic and CPU goes to 100%. Even when disconnecting the Classic, the CPU stays at 100%. When I kill the iPodService process, CPU goes down to normal. If I disable the iPodservice from being able to start (Administrative Tools - Services), I do not get the high CPU when connecting the Classic, but without this service running, iTunes will not recognize the Classic. We do not have this problem with our old 10G model or Shuffle. Only when connecting the Classic.

Has anyone had any luck with Apple acknowledging this problem and providing a workable solution or timeline for one? I just want to get an idea of what to expect if/when I finally break down and call support.

I have the same problem. I have had an 80gb and a 60gb and manually syncing new songs was not a problem. I have a new 160 gb Silver model. Itunes freezes half way through the sync process when only sycning one album. It will freeze for 80 seconds and then the rest of the songs will sync. It will then freeze up again for 80 seconds, and then I will have full use of itnues. I have tried 2 160gb ipods, I've restored and added a library. I have bought a new computer from a previous XP. My new Vista operating syatem does the exact same thing. Tech support is clueless and cannot add anything to why this is happening. I have the latest version of itunes and the latest software version for the ipod. I was able to import my entire library and my ipod seems to be working fine.

I have had both the 80gb and a 160 gb 5G iPods and manually sync both to a very large library. The new 160 gb classic is the black model. Itunes freezes half way through the sync process when syncning a small selection or a large selection of songs to transfer. It will freeze for 20, 40, 80 or more seconds and then the rest of the songs will sync. It will then freeze up again for a while, and then I will have full use of itnues and be able to sync more selections. I have reformated the 160 and the 80 Gig ipods, I've restored and added songs from the library. I am using both Windows Vista Ultimate on a new high-speed computer with 4 Gig of Ram and a previous XP Pro computer with 2 Gig. Both have high speed processors. My new Vista operating syatem does the exact same thing. I have the latest version of itunes and the latest software version for the ipod. I have been able to import 17,000 songs (34 Gig Free Space remaining) from my library, some podcasts and pictures to both ipods and the ipods work fine except when connected to a computer and trying to sync. I belive the problem is either with the latest version of Itunes software or with the software that controls the iPod for syncing. I've checked and I have the latest USB drivers from Apple. It is a royal pain in the *** to manually update my iPod with a large number of selection..

When will this problem be addressed? It appears that the 160 Gb classic is having a lot of sync issues. I have spent 9 days and a tremendous amount of time to get the issue resolved. Tech support is having a lot of people go through many unnecessary steps to resolve issues that cannot be resolved. I have almost lost my entire iTunes library of 105 GB, and I have lost my art work that took a tremendous amount of time compiling. I have sold my 80 gb and 60 gb in favor of the 160 gb, and it looks as though I have made a big mistake. If anyone has found a fix, please post it so we can start enjoying our music again.
