itunes + iPod classic freezes

When I connect my 80Gig iPod classic to my windows XP machine and play music through the PC's speakers using itunes, every time a song reaches 9 seconds iTunes freezes for 26 seconds - the music still plays but the iTunes window is frozen with no responses to mouse clicks. After the 26 seconds all the mouse clicks happen quickly as if they were queued up and the ellapsed song time skips to 35seconds and then continues on normally. During this 26 second freeze iTunes takes up 50% of the CPU in the Windows task manager Process screen. (The 50% is actually 100% of one of the 2 cores of the dual core CPU)

The freeze also happens sometimes randomly later in songs.

Plugging in the iPod takes about 1min for itunes to start up and it takes about 2 minutes to eject the iPod which seems long, my nano is significantly quicker at this, and exibits no iTunes freezes. This freezing happens on 2 different PC's that I've tried. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I'm using itunes 7.4.1.2

hp, Windows XP

I just posted feedback about this issue as well. I have 4 intel macs ranging the entire product line and the iTunes freezing issue affects all of them with iTunes 7.4.2 and iPod software version 1.0.1. I've got a 160GB Classic and it's the worst iPod out of the 9 I've ever bought. Runs semi-ok in standalone mode but with some UI sluggishness but is totally unusable when connected to iTunes. I guess too many people went to work on the iPhone :-/

I'm just another voice in a long chorus of "H-E-L-P!" I can't describe how excited I was to plug in my 160 and get going with some big transfers. Until I got going with some big transfers. Now, even the smallest of interactions with my new iPod Classic is chore I dread as much as getting teeth pulled.

I have the newest iTunes and the latest software for the iPod.

I can watch my CPU in Windows Task Manager when I'm doing anything with the iPod, and see the line on the graph peak at 100%. Then, I have to wait for anywhere from 30-120 seconds for it to finally go back down. Then, I minimize Task Manager and click on the iPod in iTunes again. Sometimes it goes straight back to 100% CPU usage. When I'm really lucky, I get to browse around or copy something over again for about 30 seconds before it goes back up to 100% again.

Looking for a solution on Apple's website has been an excruciating experience, since the "5 R's" do nothing whatsoever other than create hours more work when it comes to getting all of this music back on the iPod. Of course, right when I walked in the door from buying the new iPod, I gave my old 30 gig to my wife, and I'm darn sure not going to ask for it back. So I have to go through it all again.

I'm obviously not the only person with this problem, and I've seen that many people are getting dud replacements, so I'm not going that route, just to have to add all this music and video again.

There has to be a hacker out there somewhere who can provide a fix so we don't have to wait for the silent Apple about this.

There's my challenge. Apple or a hacker, whoever gets there first.

Someone help us. We're already out $350, and priceless hours worth of time.

I can't belive this is the experience we get for 'upgrading' to the newest and 'best'.

I purchased a 160GB Classic the very minute one was available at my local Apple store, and had to return it a couple of days later due to a list of problems making it almost unusable. I contemplated finding a replacement for my old 80GB 5.5 gen but decided to chalk the first problem up to an 'isolated' incident, and with the software update released I gave Apple the bebeifit of the doubt and picked up another Classic 160. Man am I frustrated at this point, this one is having all the same aggrevating problems as the first.

Like has been said here, iTunes sync is rdiculous, with hanging freeze-ups for a minute or more constantly. It's rediculously frustrating.

A couple of other issueas I'm having beyond the iTunes fiasco...
--when connected to my Cars system (Puomeer AVIC-D1) track names update for only a short time, then freeze.
--extremely long 'eject' time from computer

I'm really desappointed and frustrated. For crying out loud, someone address these issues.

Hi, just chiming in to add another 80 GB classic to the growing list of Freezies. Connecting, Syncing, Ejecting, or Editing anything on the device results in a 3-5 minute hang. I have verified the issue happens on multiple computers, my XP desktop at home, and my HP Vista laptop and desktop at the office. My computers at work don't ever sync with the iPod, they just play music, and still freeze up!

I have an open support case with applecare, and have already returned my first Classic for a new one. It seems to me to be some kind of database reading or writing problem, since it happens with multiple computers on multiple ipods.

I'm in the horribly painful process of rebuilding my entire library and podcast collection now, hopefully a library refresh will help. I'm not crossing my fingers though.

FIX IT APPLE! PLEASE!

The new Ipod (replacement for the first 160GB Classic) has been recieved, and there is the same stupid problem. Why they can throw new product on market which doesn't work? They can't test it, because the problem is on each Computer if test it.

New iMac with 4GB Ram, 2,6 Ghz Dual Core
2x PC with 3GB Ram, 2,0 Ghz Dual Core and Vista
1x PC with 1GB Ram, 3,0 Ghz and XP
and so on.....

Add me to the loooooooooooong list of frustrated iPod Classic owners. I have a 160GB and don't even bother plugging it into my computer anymore.

No need to retype what has been captured here so effectively by everyone else.

I want to return mine, but I bought it at Best Buy - and they are going to charge me a $60 restocking fee...so I guess I'll just keep crossing my fingers that Apple fixes this problem.

I don't have a lot of time to read the many different posts in all sections of the board, but this thread explains my situation. Has anyone gotten any feedback when they have posted the problem to support? Please keep us updated. I had tech support say that they are working on a fix. Not sure if that was his way of getting off the phone with me though.

just updated iTunes with 7.4.2.4... and.... nothing, still a mess with my Classic attached, no improvement. 😟

C'mon apple, this can't be that hard, at least offer an recognition of the problem and give your (paying) customers some good faith info. Amazing how a company can bask in it's 'iconic' staus, and even enjoy the praise of such things as 'iPhone early adopter rebates', well, thats great and all, but if your newest 'ICON' is released crippled and unworking, well...

This is NOT an unkown issue, these problems are all over this board and across the web, get it fixed already, it's just plain silly.

I have a Mac Pro and at least initially had the same or similar problems with my brand new iPod Classic 80GB that I received just yesterday. Whenever I wanted to sync it with my iTunes library, iTunes would freeze after transferring about 200 songs and the iPod would switch from state 'synchronizing' to just 'connected'. But in my case the problem actually seems to have been my USB hub in combination with the iPod, as soon as I connected the iPod directly with a port on the Mac the problem vanished. This is the first USB device though that has ever caused problems with this hub (and I have it now for at least 5 years), so I cannot help but think that the iPod Classic's usage of the USB port is a bit 'special'. Maybe it consumes more energy than most devices and operates at the limits of the USB specification, which might cause problems with some 'not-so-very high quality' USB ports/hubs, I don't know, just guessing...

Anyway, today I bought a new hub (I needed one with more ports anyway) and with that one I now also have no problems so far (crossing fingers). So maybe at least some of the posters here have the same problem.
