itunes + iPod classic freezes

When I connect my 80Gig iPod classic to my windows XP machine and play music through the PC's speakers using itunes, every time a song reaches 9 seconds iTunes freezes for 26 seconds - the music still plays but the iTunes window is frozen with no responses to mouse clicks. After the 26 seconds all the mouse clicks happen quickly as if they were queued up and the ellapsed song time skips to 35seconds and then continues on normally. During this 26 second freeze iTunes takes up 50% of the CPU in the Windows task manager Process screen. (The 50% is actually 100% of one of the 2 cores of the dual core CPU)

The freeze also happens sometimes randomly later in songs.

Plugging in the iPod takes about 1min for itunes to start up and it takes about 2 minutes to eject the iPod which seems long, my nano is significantly quicker at this, and exibits no iTunes freezes. This freezing happens on 2 different PC's that I've tried. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I'm using itunes 7.4.1.2

hp, Windows XP

I swore to myself that I wouldn't post in this forum again, and I regret it, but here's a new issue...

After spending hours upon hours adding a good deal of music (80 gigs,) and a good deal of video (4 gigs,) my iPod Classic 160 has reset itself.

There is currently 1 item on my iPod, as opposed to the 14,460 or so items that were on it about 10 minutes ago.

I feel shocked.

Unless October of 2007 is two years ago, I would request that anyone who reads this ignore this product entirely. I'll be waiting at the store's door long before it opens, (musicless, and slightly slacked.)

Do not buy the iPod Classic.

Buy something else.

Now that I've spent over two years getting used to iTunes and how to deal with my massive music collection, I'm going elsewhere.

Another day staring at a useless $350.+ brick. *My patience is gone*. This is beyond ridiculous. A deplorable way for a company of this stature to conduct itself.

Take an iconic product that had evolved into a fantastic device and in one step cripple it and it's loyal users. Sure feel good about parting with my hard earned money for what was was supposed to be an upgrade just to be kicked ten steps backawards.

"Classic"?, certainly not. Not even a formal acknowledgement of the problem. What a reward for my loyalty. *Ridiculous Steve, absolutely ridiculous*.

Everyone should print out that letter, sign it as a petition, and send it to to Apple.

Take the ping-pong paddles out of the hands of the programmers, put down the lattes and *FIX THIS*. That glow you're basking in? It ins't greatness, it's the angry heat of your decreasingly loyal customers.

At first I thought this was an iTunes issue, but a number of other (non-Classic) ipods seem to be fine with the new iTunes. My concern is, if Apple hasn't been able to do anything now almost a month after the product's launch, is that we might end up being stuck with this. My gut tells me it's time to return and wait this out.

If only we (or at least Apple employees) could be given *some kind* of clue that something is being done, or even an acknowledgment of the issue. I am hoping the company is simply overwhelmed with its iPhone/iPod Touch messes to get to the Classic, and that will eventually get resolved.

Thank God this forum exists. Just received my 160gig classic in the mail yesterday, very exciting, only to have it now constantly freeze and do everything that EVERYONE ELSE here is experiencing. Called Apple this morning, the guy was nice but no real help, and baffled. Baffled? This is a VERY REAL and IMMEDIATE ISSUE! I'm not one to cause trouble, but this Ipod should work, and it's not working. Where is the fix? I don't want to send this thing back, I just got it, and I WANT to own it!

It is Friday October 5 at 2:43 PM. After waiting on hold for 15 minutes with for an Apple Support Technician I spoke with someone who could not help me. He put me on hold for another 15 minutes and came back on line and said that he would transfer me to a supervisor. Thirty seconds later the phone line went dead. I bought my 160 Gig Ipod On Septmber 12 and will be returning it to the Apple Store on Monday. I have tried everything suggested on this forum. I love the iPod and if Apple would acknlowledge the problem I would wait for the fix. As far as I can tell Apple does not believe there is a problem. I'll stay tuned to this forum and when Apple fixes the problem I'll try again -- maybe.

1.0.2 PC has just been released for the iPod classic

...it still freezes iTunes regularly!

3 versions of iPod firmware and 3 versions iTunes have come out since I got the classic and it still has these glaring bugs!

could it be that all of the "good" programmers are working on sexy iphones/nanos/touches, leaving the unsexy classic to inexperienced newcomers and deadweight slackers?

You think you guys have problems, I have 10 customers on my back for these same issues with the classics. This is creating havoc in the iPod reseller market and unless Apple get on top of it soon they face a self inflicted PR disaster and tarnish their quality image. I mean its not looking good is it?
1. iPhone price reduction debacle
2. Crippling new iPods video-out and accessory compatibility
3. Touch defect furore
4. Classic bugs and sluggishness
5. Multiple rushed updates to iTunes/iPod firmware to fix other problems
6. Designing new iPods so new battery replacement impossible
7. Quality issues with new component cable for Video-capable iPods (ilounge)

Sounds like Apple bit off more than they could chew and launched all this stuff too early to market.

As I write this, my CPU usage level is at 100% because of iTunes and its near incompatibility with the 160GB "Classic." Just downloaded the new firmware and once again none of the issues discussed here are fixed.

THIS IS GETTING FRUSTRATING and will likely be the last iPod I ever buy. Some other mp3 players on the market are catching up with the capabilties of the iPod in days of old. I may start researching those a little more now.

80G iPod Classic - used for 2 weeks - running 1.02 (did see a little improvement in the problem between 1.01 and 1.02). Seeing the "freeze" behavior described by others. This may be is a classic I/O problem, the harddrive in the iPod lags at times, and programs (iTunes) depending on it will freeze(consume 100% of the cpu) while waiting for the data from the drive. I am not synchronizing but doing all music access directly from the iPod. I see this in iTunes (16 second freeze when playing a song and then trying some other feature of the interface - problem is intermittent) and when using the iPod by itself. I am guessing this is a QC issue with the hard drives as some people are reporting "good" performance while others like myself are very frustrated with their purchase.

I am seeing the same behavior, if I cntrl-t at the 7 sec point into the song the 100% CPU usage does NOT occur. If I don't cntrl-t I get a cpu spike for 16 seconds. Great Observation Gordio! The call to screen visualization must interupt the normal program flow. It indicates a software fix could be possible. Come on Apple, there must be a product manager who could take ownership for this problem.
