keyboard problem MacBook Pro

For the past few weeks, my macbook pro has been having problems with it's keyboard. For some time while I was using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, the keyboard on the computer itself was not working. Now I have stopped using the wireless keyboard and mouse, and sometimes my keyboard won't work at all either. Tonight it stopped working for 5 minutes, and then finally started to work again. This seems to be an intermittent problem, so when I go to the genius bar at the apple store, the problem does not occur so that they can see what is happening.

Any ideas out there on why I might be having this intermittent problem? The trackpad seemed to function, just none of the keys work for a period of time.

Thanks for any advice.

(and by the way, i posted this question initially on the wrong discussion for the macbook and didn't know how to delete it from that discussion)

Ok my story is... first the casing above the optic drive was warped and I went to the apple store to get it fixed (no charge and it's still slightly warped but it's better than before). After that I started experiencing that some of the buttons on my keyboard isn't working properly. The buttons, F5, 5,T,G,B and -, [ It kept working on and off and it's annoying. So I also went to get that fixed (no charge) I went 2 days without my laptop. They replaced the old keyboard with a new one. So now I'm siked. When I got home I tested it out and it seemed to be working fine. But after a few minutes it was acting up again and I was heated. And also, the illuminated light on the keyboard does not work either! I don't know what it is, but I think they got some DUMB and Clueless technicians working for apple. They probably didn't connect anything right. So now I'm dreading to take it back this week But I know I have to. I also have a gig coming up this weekend so I don't wanna leave it with them for a long time. What's going on APPLE??? I'm not a happy customer!

Repairing the permissions appear to work for some illogical reason.

NB my situation: Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard (Not clean install), after about a week and a single forced shutdown the issues happened. The SMC reset (power down, remove battery and power and press power button for 5secs) worked, but was only a temporary fix as the problem returned ever so often. Finally decided to try to repair the disk permissions after being told my life would be taken away from me for 3days to install new keyboard and mouse; and..... well you know the rest!!!

P.S. when the trackpad returned, was the problem exacerbated for anyone when you try to "right-click"?

Okay I brought it back to apple for the 3rd time. This time, someone at the Genius bar actually looked like he knew what he was talking about. My illuminated light didn't work and buttons 5,t,g,b were working on and off. So he replaced the top cover and hooked it up with a new one. He said that it was probably a faulty wire or something but.... everything seemed to be working fine now. Best part of all, I only had to wait 30 minutes for the repair. I sure did not want to leave it overnight again.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I also have experienced this problem. Upon first installing leopard, I launched PandoraBoy and the built-in keyboard and trackpad stopped working. I had an attached USB keyboard and continued to use that. The problem persisted through a first reboot but then went away with a second reboot. I have not had it re-occur. I thought it was PandoraBoy-related but it sounds like it's a leopard thing. I have a first generation MBP 2.0GHz Core Duo.

After installing Leopard I begun to notice kind of the same problem describe it here. In my case after some time the first letter I press on the keyboard just "wake" it but it's not actually written. At very beginning I thought I was start losing my mind, until I find this discussion.

Until now I have no problem with the trackpad, which by the way I barely use. I have made no other changes in the computer.

I am having intermittent keyboard problems on my MacBook Pro. Just got it 2 weeks ago from Apple. It is a refurbished unit but quite recent with a 2.4 GHz processor. It came with Tiger and a Leopard DVD. Did a clean install of Leopard. Did not transfer anything from my Tiger Powerbook. Used my .mac account to bring in my address book and bookmarks. Have been very careful to install programs compatible with Leopard. Use VersionTracker Pro to stay current with updates.

At times the keyboard becomes unresponsive - track pad works - rebooting fixes the problem generally for more than 24 hours. It seems to appear after waking it from sleep but I'm not sure and will pay closer attention.

Called Apple Care today. The tech had me reset the SMU and reset the PRAM. I have a case #. I will next try the Safe Boot Disk Utility fix permissions suggested in this discussion. If the keyboard issue returns will try a USB keyboard to see if it works while the MBP's is unresponsive.

Add me to the list of unhappy MBP owners with the keyboard problem. I have it on a 17" MBP 2.4 GHz SR purchased June, 2007. Like the others, my keyboard is the *.16 version* and *product ID 0x021a*. My keyboard came from the factory with one of the clips for the "1" key cap broken off (took it to the AG bar at the local Apple Store, where they gave me a new key cap).

This problem is especially annoying to me, as I do development and support work and have to log on to many different servers, as well as password-protected applications all day, every day. It's gets really old having to retype a user ID and/or password because of this issue. I nearly always have a MS Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 6000 (has a USB receiver) attached while I'm working.

I have made a feedback entry, and I'm astounded that as of this writing, there are over 12,720 views of this topic...

My keyboard is the same as yours:

Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad:

Version: 0.16
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Apple Computer
Product ID: 0x021a
Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Computer, Inc.)

Wonder if the problem is consistent with this keyboard

Would appreciate those who had their keyboards replaced by Apple would leave a post telling us their version.

I've been following this thread for quite some time because I own a MBP and I've been afraid of my keyboard locking, even though it never has.

I feel for you guys, I can't imagine being without my computer for weeks while it's "fixed".

At any rate, due to the last post, where it said the keyboard version was .016, I thought I would weigh in and say that I'm running 0.13 and not having any problems (knock on wood).

If that information helps Apple figure it out in any way...there it is.

Good luck guys!

I have one PowerBook 15" 1.67 that the keyboard and trackpad completely freezes.
It comes at different intervals and is solved by removeing the battery over night.

And I have one MacBook Pro 2.2 that the keyboard only locks up for a while and when starts functioning again after some time.
This is quite frequent, a few times a day.

Both showed the above behaviors after clean installs of 10.5

Please note that this problem is not related only to the MacBook Pro. It is also happening to the MacBook (at least mine). I have a black macbook and each time the machine go in stop (hibernation of memory) due to the end of the battery charge, when it comes back, keyboard appears not working. Only solution is to restart. I had this problem with 10.4 and also with 10.5 (I have a very intensive usage of the battery, and very often, my keyboard after a resume, stop to work). Even the leds on the CAPS LOCK stop to working.
