keyboard problem MacBook Pro

For the past few weeks, my macbook pro has been having problems with it's keyboard. For some time while I was using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, the keyboard on the computer itself was not working. Now I have stopped using the wireless keyboard and mouse, and sometimes my keyboard won't work at all either. Tonight it stopped working for 5 minutes, and then finally started to work again. This seems to be an intermittent problem, so when I go to the genius bar at the apple store, the problem does not occur so that they can see what is happening.

Any ideas out there on why I might be having this intermittent problem? The trackpad seemed to function, just none of the keys work for a period of time.

Thanks for any advice.

(and by the way, i posted this question initially on the wrong discussion for the macbook and didn't know how to delete it from that discussion)

Using MacBook Pro here. Have Version .16 keyboard and trackpad. Have experienced none of problems mentioned in other posts. Purchased in September with Tiger OS installed. Upgraded to Leopard on launch date after pre-order. I performed an archive install. Had minor problem of rapid scroll when clicking on trackpad to scroll down. May just be too heavy handed. Am keeping fingers crossed that I will not experience the problems mentioned. From what I have read of the posts, I suspect a software conflict of some sort. The problem seems to be prevalent on a wide range of hardware, not just the latest MBP models. It also seems to have occurred some with Tiger as well as Leopard. In a few instances, it might be a hardware problem. It's entirely possible that problems of some who posted are not related to the problems of others. Such can make the solution quite confusing. Would be interested to know how many of problem posters are using or have been using Bluetooth devices. I have none installed nor have ever had any installed.

I let my MBP sleep for about 6 hours. Woke it up. Had a Safari window active when it went to sleep. Tested the keyboard by typing in the Safari search window and keyboard seemed to work. Came back a little while later and started picking up email. When I attempted to respond - no keyboard input ONLY my track pad. Plugged in a USB keyboard and had access via USB external keyboard and for a brief time via MBP keyboard. Lost MBP keyboard input. Unplugged and replugged external USB keyboard. MBP keyboard came to life again and so far has stayed alive. Wrong!!! It just went into LaLa land again. The external USB keyboard remains alive.

Checked the system logs in console. Strange to me that the console stopped logging after the first keyboard failure. For what it is worth I'm including the console log starting just before I lost MBP keyboard input. Don't know how to effectively use this log. Apple Care is off line so will try them in the AM.

Hi,

I just got my macbook pro and was experiencing the same problem ... 'unresponsive keyboard'.

Yesterday I disable all Keyboard Shortcuts (except F8 thru F12, no particular reason, just happen that I used these keys often on my old powerbook).

I don't have that problem anymore. My guess is that one of the Keyboard Shortcuts is triggering this
problem, I will let Apple figure that one out.

Hope this helps you.

I haven't thoroughly read the entire thread, but here is my experience: New MBP 2.4GHz. Core 2 Duo; 2GB RAM, bought about a month ago. Didn't really test 10.4, went straight to 10.5. Keyboard and trackpad will die. Must reboot.

Additional info: maybe not related, but when I was monkeying with IP settings, causing a setting with no connectivity, maybe triggered the problem (I've seen long delays with bad IP in the past), but it was so long I don't think so.

WAY ADDITIONAL INFO (maybe): not only did the trackpad and keyboard fail, but possibly the USB port, and also the ethernet port (no light on switch). Like a power issue. Apple: Get 'er done!!!

Same problem just began on my 17" Macbook Pro 2.16GHz.

Occurs with 10.4.10, 10.5, and also with the just-released 10.4.11.

Evidently a hardware problem, since from a cold boot, the keyboard is dead as evidenced by the fact that none of the start-up key combos like Cmd-Opt-P-R (PRAM reset), holding down Shift to disable non-Apple startup items work. Neither do other key combos like those to enter Open Firmware or Single User Mode.

Additionally, the trackpad does not work, and if you open System Prefs->Keyboard and Mouse (using an external USB keyboard and mouse) you can see that there is no trackpad in the pref pane.

And, running USB Prober (from the Developer Tools) shows that the internal keyboard and trackpad simply -don't exist-. They are not visible to the system at all.

Tips such as turning off accidental trackpad input don't work here (it was already off when the problem began). Rebooting does not necessarily help. Sometimes after 7 or 8 (or 20 - yes I tried) reboots the internal kbd and trackpad might come back for a little while, but they stop working again after a short while.

Rebooting with Shift key down (on an external USB keyboard) has no effect.

A couple times I removed the battery while running from AC adapter and the kbd and trackpad resumed working, but it is not dependable, usually it has no effect. But it does seem to point to something physically wrong that is affected by the jostling of removing and reinserting the battery.

I don't know if this will help you but, I used to have the same problems you describe here with my white MacBook using 10.4.10. The keyboard and trackpad dissapeared all of a sudden (even Sidetrack was unable to load). After brute force rebooting I was able to use an external usb mouse and get partial access.
What I came to notice is that everytime I experienced this problem, bluetooth was turned ON. I had it OFF by default. This was kind of a loop since I tried to turn bluetooth back to OFF and after a few minutes or after a restart it came back to ON, hence the internal keyboard/trackpad were disabled.
I managed to delete all my previous bluetooth pairings (migthy mouse, cell phone and bluetooth headset, I found a bluetooth modem device probably from my cell phone) took all those out, trashed bluetooth .plist. The Problem stopped.

And yes, I was able to reproduce these problems if for whatever reason I turned Bluetooth ON; at the beginning I tried several things: resetting the PRAM, applejack, disk utility, Onyx, TechTool Pro, non of those detected a problem in Hw or Sw

I am in Leopard now (clean install) no problems so far.

BTW, Sidetrack 1.5 does not work in Leopard and cause similar problems, although there is Beta already posted in the Ragingmenace site that seems to work

Cheers,

i just joined the "broken keyboard club" - 2 weeks after my warranty expired!!! no new programs installed in a while, no issues for over a year, running 10.4.10 and 2 days ago keyboard goes completely dead, external keyboard is working and the trackpad is working. I can also type using a tracker/mouse and the keyboard viewer.
Last night some of the keys started working again!!! So now i have about 50% of random keyes working!

I don't think this isn't just a Leopard problem. I'm running 10.4.11 (and had the problem with 10.4.10 as well) ... a few weeks ago I noticed that I had the 'misses the first key' bug: the first key typed quickly in a sequence of keystrokes get lost, so e.g. ids and passwords are typed incorrectly.

A few days ago I noticed that my keyboard was cutting out after perhaps 10-20 minutes of operation. Trackpad still worked, as did the external mouse. Rebooting has been the only way to get the keyboard back.

Today I noticed that using the external mouse seems to be triggering the problem. Plug in the mouse (make doesn't seem important, I've tried a few mice and results are uniform) and I lose the keyboard within 5 minutes. No mouse, it works all day.

The keyboard does feel 'clunky' the past few weeks, requiring more pressure than I remember and missing a few keystrokes in ways that don't usually happen with my style of typing.

Oh, well, I did get AppleCare for it, I guess it's going to the shop.
